I don't mean to be rude, but I think everyone knows how dangerous a wolf can be. I know you might be thinking "Not everyone knows!" True, very true. But people should be smart enough canines of any kind can be dangerous, especially wolves. And several people have talked about how stupid people are to think wolves aren't dangerous, so I think we understand that they're dangerous by now xD

SilverPack wrote:people who say wolves are harmless are idiots. Think about a dog, are they harmless? No. They can cause serious damage and even kill you. Yes that dog that sleeps in your bed and who you rough house with could kill you.(unless its like a small one... Still those can still bite and its not fun either! Now imagine a wolf, completely wild. It can kill you easier then a dog. It's probably got experience taking down large game. Lets see who can do that without a gun or trap? Anyone? No? Thought so. I almost want those people to try it. Just so they can relise how illogical their thinking is. I'd rather they not. But that's not the point. O.o
My dog's breed has killed 2 innocent women in '06. Imagine a hungry Presa Canario-Wolf Hybrid. But that's not the point. XD

Despite what some people think they know about the behavior of wolves I have actually done my own research, written by wildlife biologist, and not believed every rumor I have heard from someone who has an agenda (usually ranchers/hunters/wolfaboos) and the last thing I would be worried about if I was hiking or camping would be wolves. What I would consider real dangers would be snakes, bears, deadly spiders in my boots, hunters shooting without a clear line of sight and serial killers (if you don't believe me look into the amount of people killed by human predators every year while in national parks), or even deer which can and will attack if provoked. The facts are that a healthy wolf not raised by humans wants nothing to do with people, and the only reason they would come near enough to be seen would be if someone had been feeding them (dumb), they were curious (yes they are allowed to be curious without being shot), or in cases like Yellowstone where they are so used to the tourist who come to see them and other wildlife (who brought millions of tourist dollars to that state by the way) that they don't see humans as a serious threat, unlike in states like Alaska where they go out of their way to butcher every wolf they can find. And anyone who actually believes they don't kill the cubs too needs to open their eyes. The real danger comes from wolfdogs which are unfortunately becoming more and more popular. The have all of a wolf's hunting instincts and none of the natural fear of humans from the dog side, also depending on the breed used to cross with the wolf they can be mentally unstable. Wolves are no different than any other natural predator in that they need their own space and knowledge and respect from humans. They don't spend their time lurking in the shadows waiting to pounce on children and Little Red Riding Hood is not a factual account.

I'm really glad that Wind clarified that up. Thank you xD I'm glad all of you guys had your own opinions, but I think we all get it that wolves, (as well as other wild animals) are dangerous, if hungry or provoked. We should know enough to not really try to provoke any living thing, so.. we're done. xD

i personally fear coyotes much more than i do wolves lmao the coyotes around here are pretty aggressive and not afraid to run right up to you.
@ Wind Chimes - the regulations in Alaska certainly don't allow people to go out of their way and slaughter every wolf they can (though i'm not entirely familiar with the laws there, i have heard quite a bit from others and read up on the regulations, tags, and licenses), and young cubs cannot legally be killed. younger wolves can, however, though even this is rare as the bag limit for each hunter is usually extremely low (just 1 in many places), so most knowledgeable hunters don't bother with the younger animals. just looking at the ADFG website, though, it's obvious that hunting there is very regulated (especially when it comes to wolves).
In summary, great efforts have been made since 1990 to develop a lasting wolf management policy for Alaska. The department and the board have tried to develop a policy that recognizes the importance of the wolf to Alaska, recognizes the widely divergent values people have about wolves, and allows wolf populations to be regulated when necessary to maintain the ability of people to harvest moose and caribou. To date, all such efforts have either failed or been inconclusive, and the issue is as controversial as ever.
The department will never again conduct widespread and continuous wolf control to increase ungulate populations. The monetary costs are too high and the public does not want their wildlife to be managed in that manner.
(from here. kind of interesting, wolf management sure seems to be much more controversial than any other form of hunting haha)

Oh my goodness, I'm still here. <3 Number 17 on the list as DragonDance; my old username. <3 I miss discussing wolf business here, they're still my favourite animal and I've been drawing so much of them lately.
I see there've not been many recent posts, so thought I might just drop one. Been a long time!

I was DragonDance before, and I may change it back, so please do not take the name. Thank you. <3
