Hey! My family has decided to get pigeons in the spring. So excited! However, we are hatching them which is SCARY! Has anyone ever done that? Hatched, hand fed, raised them? If so, could you pm me! I'd love to know some stuff, I have questions.

Hi there!
I was just wondering if anyone knows much about pheasants? We have a male golden x lady Amherst pheasant that hangs about our house and has been for about two years now. This year he turned very aggressive for a while and would attack your feet even if you were just walking outside to hang out washing or something! I don't know if this is normal behaviour or not or if can be expected every year.

Why are you joining: I've had chickens my entire life, and currently have over fifty free-range chickens, plus four waterfowl and eleven guinea fowl. I don't meet many other people on CS who have chickens so I decided to join when I found this thread. :D
Favorite poultry bird: chickens!
Other: The majority of my chickens consist of games/Easter Egger mutts, and I have one leghorn rooster. I have one Toulouse goose (used to have a lot more), two Chinese ganders, and a part Toulouse part Chinese gander.

I'm just going to pop in here and say I miss my chickens. I gave them to my grandma when I moved, I mean, apartments aren't really a place for chickens. :P

Here's shortly after I moved my chicks outside years ago.

Why are you joining: I'm obtaining 3-4 chickens and would like a supportive community for advice and such.
Favorite poultry bird: Chickens! (Ayam Cemanis specifically).
Other: In case anyone's curious about the chickens I'll be getting: a Buff Orpington, an Ameraucana, a Speckled Sussex, and an Ayam Cemani. All hens.

    -- -- --

Also a quick question: if a farm specifies on their price list that chicks of a certain breed are a certain price for straight run, but gives no other options, does that mean that only come straight run? Bylaws where I live prevent me from ever owning a rooster, so it's imperative that they're a hen. I'm willing to pay a little bit of extra if that's what's required, but I'm not sure how that would work. Thoughts?

Yeah. If they're listed as straight run. That's all they offer.

In your case I honestly wouldn't even gamble on day old pullets. Even the best can only sex with 90% accuracy. I'd go pay for point of lay pullets if I were in your situation.
Save yourself the heartache of falling in love with a supposed pullet to have it turn our to be a rooster instead and have to get rid of him.

Why are you joining: I'm a huge poultry nerd c: I breed, raise, show, and (rarely) sell. I'm currently an animal science b.s. major starting up my college's first poultry club where we can build coops, and show chickens!
Favorite poultry bird: I don't want to sound cliche in saying Seramas but they are! My silkie/serama rooster is my favorite man and even cuddles at night!
Other: After having a harsh 2016, I'm left with 11 chickens:
~Blue, wheaten Serama hen
~Dove, black tailed Japanese Bantam hen
~Little Hawk, splash Silkie/Serama rooster
~Earnest, baby roo of Little Hawk & Blue
~Ozzie, another baby roo of Little Hawk & Blue
~Pipsqueak, baby pullet of LH & Blue
~Tiny Hawk, pullet? of LH & Blue
~Crook, baby roo of Dove and LH. Born with a tilted and crossed break hence the name hehe
~Noel, white silkie (looks like a pullet!)
~Muffin, buff/slightly spotted silkie (another pullet looker)
~Nugget, buff silkie (another pullet looker but sadly missing the extra silkie toe ;c)

Sigh~ I miss owning chickens, and raising them. I used to hand raise them and they became rather accustomed to me as well as ducks. I really wanted to get some game birds like partridge and pheasants, I guess they'll have to wait

The chickens I used to have
5 Buff orpington
2 Wyandottes
3 Americanas
More Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks than I can count
1 porcelain
Some random chickens whose breeds I can't remember

I used to have a GORGEOUS rooster, and he was a nice boy. Would greet you, let you hold him, etc.
