Hi all! Just took a look through the last few pages here and I have to say lovely little feather babies everybody.
I always wondered why there weren't more chicken lovers running around here considering the name of the site
is ChickenSmoothie.
Anyway, we've always had chickens. Started with a bunch of White Leghorns and a couple of ducks and geese my Mom got us at our local Farmer's Market way way back a looooong time ago when I was a kid. Those were pretty much just pets that ran around our property by day and went into a coop at night for protection from coyotes, foxes, etc.
Later when she was with her ex husband, we became serious about egg production and had a really nice big walk in coop with a couple of dozen random Rhode Island Reds, Barred Plymouth Rocks, and a couple of White Leghorn Hens.
Most recently, I've been away from chicken keeping for the past several years. Finally convinced my hubby, who's into "Prepping" that it would be a lovely idea to have some chickens for the fresh eggs. So, though I've always had chickens, this is my first adventure into keeping them since I'm "all grown up"
We finished the coop just yesterday.

And our three babies spent their first night outside yesterday.

I'll call them Easter Eggers just because I'm pretty sure they're more than likely NOT pure Ameriacaunas due to their parentage.
We hatched them from eggs from my Aunt Kathy's "Ameraucanas" which came from our local Tractor Supply about six years ago. One of her hens, Kate, is a pretty buff/wheaten. The other, Angie, is a very dark buff. And Goldencrown, the daddy of our babies, is a gorgeous silver. So, because of their mixed colors and dodgy earlier heritage, and so as to not offend any purists out there, I shall lovingly refer to them as my Easter Eggers.
They are the sweetest, most cuddly friendly little chickens I've ever known. I've been keeping them in a big Rubbermaid tote in the basement for the past few weeks till the coop was done and they were big enough to go in it. For the past week and a half or so, they've been fully capable of hopping up onto the edge and getting right out of that tote. The only time they did though was when I or one of my girls would go downstairs. They'd hop right out and follow us around the basement bugging to be picked up. Then they snuggle right into the crook of our arms and fall asleep. I'd swear they're puppies if they didn't have feathers.
So, I guess my question is, are Easter Egggers/Ameraucanas particularly snuggly by nature or is it just because we hatched them and they're that strongly imprinted on us?
