I would just love to have chickens, or any poultry! They're so cute and fluffy and adorable! That's partly the reason why I became vegetarian, heh heh. c:

Hi all! Just took a look through the last few pages here and I have to say lovely little feather babies everybody.

I always wondered why there weren't more chicken lovers running around here considering the name of the site is ChickenSmoothie.

Anyway, we've always had chickens. Started with a bunch of White Leghorns and a couple of ducks and geese my Mom got us at our local Farmer's Market way way back a looooong time ago when I was a kid. Those were pretty much just pets that ran around our property by day and went into a coop at night for protection from coyotes, foxes, etc.

Later when she was with her ex husband, we became serious about egg production and had a really nice big walk in coop with a couple of dozen random Rhode Island Reds, Barred Plymouth Rocks, and a couple of White Leghorn Hens.

Most recently, I've been away from chicken keeping for the past several years. Finally convinced my hubby, who's into "Prepping" that it would be a lovely idea to have some chickens for the fresh eggs. So, though I've always had chickens, this is my first adventure into keeping them since I'm "all grown up"
We finished the coop just yesterday.

And our three babies spent their first night outside yesterday.

I'll call them Easter Eggers just because I'm pretty sure they're more than likely NOT pure Ameriacaunas due to their parentage.
We hatched them from eggs from my Aunt Kathy's "Ameraucanas" which came from our local Tractor Supply about six years ago. One of her hens, Kate, is a pretty buff/wheaten. The other, Angie, is a very dark buff. And Goldencrown, the daddy of our babies, is a gorgeous silver. So, because of their mixed colors and dodgy earlier heritage, and so as to not offend any purists out there, I shall lovingly refer to them as my Easter Eggers.

They are the sweetest, most cuddly friendly little chickens I've ever known. I've been keeping them in a big Rubbermaid tote in the basement for the past few weeks till the coop was done and they were big enough to go in it. For the past week and a half or so, they've been fully capable of hopping up onto the edge and getting right out of that tote. The only time they did though was when I or one of my girls would go downstairs. They'd hop right out and follow us around the basement bugging to be picked up. Then they snuggle right into the crook of our arms and fall asleep. I'd swear they're puppies if they didn't have feathers.

So, I guess my question is, are Easter Egggers/Ameraucanas particularly snuggly by nature or is it just because we hatched them and they're that strongly imprinted on us?

Very nice Coop! And lovely EEs you have there! I'm not quite sure, because I have had Ameraucanas that are snugly like you said, then I have had some that refuse to be touched.

Infact, I have one now that is learning up/down command. sounds strange but she likes to fly up onto my arm, I think she has the down command, but she is still trying to grasp up. Is that normal? lol

They look lovely 'Possum! I've only hatched out two araucana before so I can't say much about how snuggly they are, but I'm glad they're going along so well!

Right now I'm itching to get home...all the eggs I set under the broody hen are hatching and I'm not going to be able to see them until tommorow ;u; They were supposed to be hatching the day I got back! Now I'm going to miss them hatch :C

Idk how remaking a topic could bring it back to life.

So a couple weeks ago my rooster died. I was gone during the day, helping my mom at work, and I came home and my dad randomly broke the news to me. My rooster was acting sick and lethargic, and my dad just ignored this 100% strange and odd behavior?

I would want to wait a while before even considering a new rooster but a mom's friend of mine has two roosters and would give away one to me. He's a beautiful rooster and I would love to raise chicks out of him but I'd never do it because I refuse to get cockerels out of eggs and have to basically give away dinner for someone's table.

I'm really sorry Onew, Losing chickens is always hard. I lost one of my old girls a while back, she had been with me for years. All because my mom let them out of the pen while i was away, like I tell her not to do every time. And I know how you feel about getting more Roos out of eggs. I usually try to give them to a good home, but I know its hard.

On a brighter note:
I got three young Buff Orpington pullets a few days ago! They are so sweet <3

Awesome I'd love to see pics of your new babies.

As for the roosters, yeah, it is hard to make sure they're going somewhere good. Luckily my Aunt, the one who gave me the chicks I'm raising right now will happily take any roosters back from me. She's got plenty of room over there to let them roam safely and we can go visit them any time we want.

I'm thinking my 3 original chicks are all hens since the one my Aunt kept is definitely a rooster by his plumage and none of mine look even close to him. We've got 2 new chicks from the same hens that I am not as sure of though. Can't wait till they grow up and I can figure out what they all are already.

Sorry to hear about your rooster Onew :C It's always hard to loose a lovely rooster, my mum and I were in tears when our favourite had to get put down :(
We've flat out stopped selling our roosters unless they're purebred since it's just so hard to know what will happen to htem. I don't mind if they go for dinner, but you hear horrible rumors about people buying them up to use as live bait for their dogs.....we just deal with then ourselves now. Thankfully one of our P'Rock roosters is getting to go to my friends flock! We're keeping one of the others, hopefully he gives us some big babies uwu

Our chicks are just under a week old now, and I think some of them are definitely from our new Light Sussex rooster! I can't wait until they're fully grown to see their colours <33

We've got another broody on a second clutch as well!

Funny thing is, she's the daughter of the hen in the first picture! It's nice to see her silkie genes have passed down well xD
