IMO, good "typical" beginner snakes:

Colubrids: rats, corns, kings, garters (venom, mild, rearfang), milks, hogs (venom, mild, rearfang), gophers, pines, most north american colubrids in other words

Boas: rosy, sand

Pythons: Antaresia species which are children's, spotted, and stimsons; ball

However I have seen folks very successfully start with snakes such as jungle carpets, blood pythons, and rainbow boas. However, it's not something I would personally suggest. No matter what snake you go with, you absolutely have to research research research and be prepared for what you'll come up against. I personally started with a ball python and I consider them to be the "hardest" beginner snakes, but I don't think it's fair to consider them intermediates when the real intermediate species are much larger and much more difficult.
