They came barreling into her life like a pair of winter storms, fur flying like snow, teeth like ice and smiles like summer, dangerous all the same.
Lila didn't know where they came from, all she knew was that they came when she needed them most.
That night, she thought she was dead.
When the winter spirits were closing around, bloody teeth bared to the black night, obsidian claws reaching for her throat, they came tearing into the kill circle out of the bracken and bushes, dispersing the foul wraiths with snaps and snarls.
They crowded against her as she sobbed, still confused and terrified, their cold noses and warm coats assuring her that she was still alive.
Then, one of them slipped his head beneath her arm and nudged her to her feet and the other bounded ahead of them, breaking a path through the thick snow.
Lila was too worn and her mind too sodden with fear to even begin to wonder about where they were taking her. Snow and darkness filled her vision, though slowly it was becoming more and more darkness and less and less snow until she was simply wading though a frozen void.

When she woke up, she was curled up in front of her fireplace, a hearty blaze burning though when she'd left, the hearth had been stone cold. She was leaning against the foot of her couch and a mountain of fur on either side of her.
She didn't question their presence. It was clear enough they'd been sent as her guardians. By who or for what reason was beyond reason to ask, the fae and Elder folk had their own motives. Lila was simply grateful that one had seen it fit to send the hounds to her aid.
