Here's my entry!
I Forgive You
Dameon quickly lit his arrow aflame, drawing it back and pointing it towards the beast's weak point- it's heart. All he had to do was let go of the arrow, and it would all be over.
Let it go, Dameon. Why aren't you shooting? He could hear his father's words in his head, urging him to kill the dragon. To kill the beast that had taken his father from him. He knew he had every right to let that arrow go without hesitation and take revenge on the scaled creature that had so cruelly taken his father from him, and yet he still hesitated. There was something about this creature, this giant that was calmly staring into him, that made Dameon feel bad for what he was about to do. "Any last words, beast?" Damon spat the words out to buy himself time, so he could sort out what this feeling was. A feeling of dread, almost, like something bad would happen if he killed this dragon.
"It was not an act of cruelty, rather an act of self defense." The creature rumbled softly, it's deep words echoing across the cavern walls. The dragon still did not move; it made no attempt to flee or attack, as if it knew it was in no danger despite the arrow pointed at it.
Dameon allowed his arm to slacken, and the arrow drooped down, no longer pointing at this beast. He knew he didn't have it in himself to kill this dragon, yet he didn't know why.
What are you doing? Shoot it! His father's voice urged him on, yet his instinct was telling him to listen to the dragon's story. "Explain."
The dragon turned it's bright amber eyes to a hole above the cavern ceiling. "That was your father." Dameon looked closer at the hole, realizing it was indeed formed by man. Most likely, formed by explosives. The dragon once again looked back down at the boy in front of him. "Your father... He was a greedy man. When he took rule, I knew bad was to come. He sought for riches, and he cared for nothing else. It's a wonder he had enough time to have you. He began to attack every dragon around here, searching for our treasuries. I knew one day he would find me, and that we would have to fight. At first, my plan was to leave. But, alas, fate has different plans, and by the time your father decided to attack I had a family. Three kids barely out of their eggs. I couldn't desert them; I couldn't desert
her."
Dameon took in a shaky breath. "He.. he tried to kill your family?"
Don't listen to him, son. He tells lies. Dragons aren't to be trusted, kill him while you have the chance! But looking into the deep orbs of this reptile's eyes, he could tell the story was sincere. Dameon was even sure he saw sympathy in those amber eyes, pity for he was revealing the truth of Dameon's father.
"He not only tried, he succeeded. And for what? A few ores?" The dragon closed it's eyes, the loss clearly still affecting him. "I tried reasoning with him beforehand. Tried to make him see it wasn't worth it. But he wouldn't see it anyone else's way, only his way. And his way was one filled with blood and pain. When he killed her, my mate, I snapped. It was all so quick, I had no time to save her, no time to snap myself out of my blind rage. I blasted so many of his men with fire, they quickly dropped. I barely felt their arrows, the pain inside was far worse. When it was over, when his men were all dead, I found them. I found my children, two dead already. Sometime during the fight, they must have gotten them. My daughter though, she was alive. Tied up, sobbing, and being taken away by your father. He must have hid during the fight instead of facing me. It was all a blur I hadn't known he was still alive. When your father realized I had found him, he panicked. He took out his sword and warned me not to get any closer or he would kill her. I told him to leave, not to come back, but he wouldn't go. He insisted on getting his riches, he told me he wouldn't leave before I handed them over, and said if I didn't my daughter would join my two sons. The fear in my daughter's eyes as he held that blade to her chest... I'll never forget it. Of course I told him he could have it all. I brought it all to him, every last piece, while he stood with the sword to my daughter. When he had gotten the rest of it, he laughed and looked at me with this crazed face. He told me then, 'Did you really think I'd leave you anything?' and thats when it happened. I realized what was about to happen, so I swung my tail around to smash him. I was too late. As soon as my tail collided with him, his blade was imbedded into my baby girl, and she was gone. Just like that. Don't you realize? I had to, I'm so sorry, I had to."
Dameon watched the dragon break down, crying for all he had lost, and crying for making Dameon suffer a loss just as he had. The dragon fell to the ground, dust and bits of stone rushing up as he thumped down with a great thud. His forehead was reached just high enough for Dameon to reach. Hesitantly, the boy walked up to the sobbing beast and laid his hand of it's head.
Traitor! Kill the beast! "It's alright," he whispered. "I forgive you." Dameon felt a rush through him as his father's presence disappeared. Finally, he was rid of the burden that had haunted his childhood.
