"Since we are now allowed to adopt a pound pet every 3 hours, it's now much more easier to get them. I thought it would be fun and quite a challenge to finish a hoard only by adopting from the pound. No trading allowed - only pound adoption."

"C'mon dad, we're going to be late!"

Ears twitching, Colonel Jonas Quinton turned to see his son waiting eagerly by the front door, tail wagging furiously. The young pup's eyes sparkled behind his mask, clearly overwhelmed with excitement. The demon wings perched on his back flapped awkwardly as he spun about and pawed at the doorknob. When his father didn't immediately move to his side to help, he shook the scythe in his paws and barked.

"Sam and Jack already said they were going to meet us at Chris' house! We can't be late or we'll get the worst candy!"

The soldier managed a small, nervous smile, placing a Roman helmet atop his head and hefting his sword and shield. It was his first year back from the military, having been discharged due to a severe injury on his right shoulder, and lifting them took a bit of effort. He forced the fur along his back to lie flat, breathing deep as he closed his eyes and counted each inhale and exhale. Crowds made him nervous...especially on Halloween. All those confusing costumes, the noise, the smells...it got overwhelming.

Usually, Daniel would be the one to take their son out for these kinds of things. He understood why his husband felt so unsettled. Granted, Jonas was usually overseas and unable to make it...but this year fate had seen to it that Daniel be stuck in a business meeting across the continent and unable to go trick or treating. So now, it was up to Jonas...dressed as the gladiator his son insisted he was.

"Alright, Alec, alright. No need to rush. I know papa couldn't be here today but I'm sure we'll do just fine on our own. We'll even save some candy for him when he gets home tomorrow, ok?"

Seemingly satisfied, Alec followed his father as the soldier scooped up their empty candy basket and opened the door. The pup was practically vibrating with excitement. Jonas had to smile as he stepped out onto the front porch. Perhaps this wouldn't be so bad.

"Now, remember not to run too far ahea-"

And almost immediately, Jonas had to fling his shield up in defense as a group of teenagers ran past, howling and yipping as they pelted his door with eggs. Yelping in surprise, Alec was pushed behind him to make sure nothing would hit him. His scythe clattered to the ground.

It was over in a few minutes, but Jonas was shaking as he slowly lowered his egg-covered shield. His breaths were coming rapidly, too rapidly, and it took a moment before he noticed his son calling for him. The troublemakers were gone...they were gone...

"Dad? Dad! You ok?" His big brown eyes were trained on Jonas' face, now filled with nerves instead of joy. Jonas hated seeing that look on Alec's face.

Slowly, he bent to retrieve Alec's scythe, handing it over with a fond smile. "I'm fine sweetheart. Just a bit surprised...c'mon, we have to meet Sam and Jack, right? We can't let those guys stop us!"

And the spark was back, shining bright in his son's eyes as he trot alongside his father to meet up with their friends. And Jonas, slowly, was getting into the Halloween spirit as they approached their first house and knocked on the door. Alec's joy grew with each successful trick-or-treat, and soon he felt bold enough to insist on going with his friends alone up to the doorbells and wandering from house to house. Eventually, Jonas felt comfortable enough to leave Alec with the group and head off back home. He'd done what he'd come out to do, and Sam and Jack's parents promised to bring Alec home at a respectable hour.

On his way home however, the soldier decided that it wouldn't hurt to try and visit a house himself. Just to prove that he could, in fact, do normal things like go trick-or-treating on Halloween. Yes, he may have been changed by his time in the military, and not all changes had been positive. But Jonas was working to improve them, and this could be another step on the road to recovery.

With a shrug and self-depreciating chuckle, he hefted his sword and shield and walked up to a random door with some confidence. After a quick knock, he settled back to wait with a soft smile.

"Trick or Treat!"

After a moment you hear some shuffling on the other side of the door. You sit up a bit straighter as it cracks open, flooding the porch with light, and a small pup peaks out at you. His brown eyes are curious behind the skeleton mask on his face, and he smiles at you even as an older dog, camo-colored and wearing a roman gladiator outfit, steps up behind him protectively.

"Hi!" the pup chirps, tail wagging furiously. “That costume is so cool, did you make it yourself?” The demon wings on his back flap awkwardly as he turns to pull a bowl of candy out from behind him.

“I'm a reaper!”

He puffs out his chest, clearly proud of his outfit, and the gladiator chuckles. Reaching into the bowl, the adult dog tosses some treats into your basket before gently nudging the pup back inside.

“Sorry, Alec always gets a little excited around this time of year. Enjoy your candy and stay safe out there, alright?"

"Bye!" the young pup calls out from inside the house, waving at you as you step off the porch and back into the night.

"Happy Halloween!"

A muffled thump and a curse float through the closed door after you knock, almost as if you surprised someone with your visit. You vaguely hear someone muttering to themselves and the sound of approaching paw-steps. A few more bangs and thumps later the door opens, flooding the porch with light as a handsome but weary looking dog peers out at you from the warmth of the house. Behind him you can see a knocked over suitcase and opened briefcase, along with numerous books, sketchpads, and what look to be precious Egyptian artifacts scattered among them.

Did he just arrive from a trip...?

The dog's brows furrow as he takes in your costume, his head tilted to the side. "Oh, hello. Judging by the costume and the fact that it's Halloween, I assume you're here for candy..." His words trail off as he glances behind him, obviously taking in the mess. After a moment he speaks again, nose scrunching in dismay.

"Which I don't really have...I'm sorry, I just got back from a business trip, and my husband and son are out trick or treating. I don't think they expected any visitors since they didn't leave any treats behind." He pauses, blinking. "Which would make sense since they didn't think I'd be here to give any out...I got back early, you see. Wanted to surprise them after I finished cataloguing all this." With his tail, the dog gestures behind him to the artifacts.

As if sensing your dismay at not getting a treat for your trouble, the dog sighs and straightens his glasses. "I'm sorry, I know this must be a bit of a let down. I can't promise anything, but if you come back in an hour or so I may have something for you then. Depends on when my family gets back and how fast I can do my work."

Ushering you gently off his porch, he gives you a soft smile and a quick, "Good luck with the rest of your night!" before closing the door once more.

Smiling bashfully, Jonas accepts the treat with a small nod. Things hadn't gone so bad after all! "Thank you very much. Have a wonderful Halloween," he barked as he turned and headed back toward home as originally planned.

In all honesty, Robert grumbled as he attempted to properly rig up the last piece of his costume, this likely wouldn't even be worth it. Sure, this might be the best costume idea he'd come up with in years, but was it worth all the struggle? The sheer frustration when things didn't quite measure up to the picture he had in his head? No one would likely even get who he was trying to be anyway. It frustrated the young engineering student to the point where he had to sit down and take a few calming breaths, eyeing himself critically in the mirror from the corners of his eyes.

Also, why on earth had he decided wearing sunglasses at night would be a good idea? He'd likely end up tripping over everything in his path...brilliant. Well done, Robert, he thought as he shifted to look over their brim.

A gorgeous red suit and pale tie, the remains of last year's homecoming dance, were what had sparked this idea in the first place. It had reminded him of the colors of one of his favorite superheros, and the idea had run away with him from there. He'd spent the last three months of his free-time cooped up in the engineering department, designing and building the remaining pieces he needed. Though he'd wanted to (oh how he'd wanted to...) Robert couldn't exactly build an entire set of functioning armor to wear for Halloween. That would take far more time than the canine had and likely would have left him exhausted from carrying it's weight when he returned home.

Not to mention his teachers would have probably killed him for using up all their parts.

So instead, he'd built bits and pieces to attach to a wire framework, making a harness to go beneath his suit to hold it up behind him. If he couldn't wear the armor, Robert damn well was going to have it follow him around like a sentinel. It was the thought that count anyway, right? He'd even painted them the bright hot-rod red and gleaming gold of Iron Man's actual armor. It might be a slightly lopsided thing, and not nearly as polished as the CGI suit in the movies, but it didn't look half bad.

Once he had that part down, the canine had set to work building a small, portable light in the shape of a circle to affix to his chest. Right where his heart should be. After all, what was Iron Man without the A.R.K Reactor? This part had taken him roughly two days to complete, in between studying for his exams and meeting up with his study group for extra practice. And in the end, he'd been extremely excited to show off his creations when Halloween finally came about.

The harness and framework had worked perfectly during his test runs, too. So of course now, when it was actually Halloween, they decided to stop cooperating. Every time the canine managed to prop the suit up behind himself so that it looked like it were floating, the support beams suddenly buckled and the whole thing came toppling down.

Taking a deep, calming breath, Robert cracked his neck from side to side and reached behind him once more to keep fiddling with the supports. "C'mon you piece of junk! Work with me, here!"

They still didn't work...

With an agitated breath through his nose, the engineering student shut his eyes and counted backwards from ten.

"I swear, if you don't stay up there like you're supposed to, I'm going to dismantle you piece by piece and throw each one into the scrap heap while you watch."

After five more minutes of fiddling and threats, the supports finally clicked into place and stayed there, making the canine let out a triumphant bark. "Oh my god, finally!" he wheezed. Adding a cheap knockoff Rolodex to one paw, and strapping the brightly glowing circle of energy on his chest, Robert had to admit that, despite his frustration, he looked pretty good.

"Tony Stark at your service," he said with a grin, throwing a cheeky wink to his own reflection. No time to waste now! There were treats to be had and after all this effort to get ready, Robert couldn't wait to get started. "Time to meet up with Thomas and Mark and show them just who is going to be getting the most treats this year."

Laughing, he turned and grabbed an empty goody-bag from his desk and practically flew out the door. Classmates and strangers alike called out to him in the hallway, complimenting not only his costume but the engineering prowess behind it as well. And the stunned looks he pulled from his friends when they met up off-campus made everything worth it. Falling into step beside them, makeshift suit floating about behind them like an ever-vigilant bodyguard, Robert felt all his previous frustration melt away as he enjoyed simply hanging out with them on Halloween night.

The houses and their owners seemed to pass by too quickly, the compliments and confused looks making him equal parts happy and resigned. Wherever he could Robert attempted to let loose some quote or Tony Stark-like quip to make people recognize his costume better. But time was fleeting, and one by one his friends started to drift off back to their dorms. College was rough after all, and no one wanted to flunk an exam because they had stayed out all night and gorged themselves on candy.

Checking his knockoff watch, Robert scrunched his nose and decided that he would try one more house before heading back to his dorm himself. But which one to choose...? Glancing about, the engineering student closed his eyes, threw out his paw at random, and walked straight up to the house it had landed on. Shifting his shoulders to settle the suit more comfortably across his back, Robert took a deep breath, cocked his head, and reached out to knock sharply on the door.

"Trick-or-treat," he barked with a brilliant smile plastered across his lips.

After a moment you hear some shuffling on the other side of the door. You sit up a bit straighter as it cracks open, the space behind it filled with dim but pleasantly warm lights. Combined with the harsh fluorescents in the college hallway it is easy to see what exactly has opened the door for you.

Your heart skips a beat for a moment when you realize that what you’re seeing isn’t actually an animal. It’s…a machine.

Sleek chrome limbs attached by mechanical joints shine in the stark light from the hallway, their edges accented with gold. Two dim, black eyes made of glass and wires rise up to meet yours as the thing takes a step forward. Someone has also taken the time to dress it for the occasion, because it’s decked out in gorgeous red and black armor the edges of which are also accented with gold.

You stand, dumbfounded, staring at what is clearly the most cleverly designed artificial life form you’ve ever seen.

The mechanical dog's eyes light up with green for a moment as he takes in your costume, head tilting to the side. You get the feeling that it’s scanning you…almost as if it’s trying to determine whether or not you’re a threat. Once its gaze has dimmed once more the machine straightens, an accented yet clearly artificial male voice beginning to emit from its form.

“Visitor is non-hostile.” His mechanical tails swishes once, gears whirring. “My primary inspection indicates that you are here in search of some manner of sweets, given the date, your choice of clothing, and the late hour.”

It’s disconcerting not seeing the construct’s mouth move as it speaks…

And that’s another thing. It speaks! Can machines even do that?! Your mind whirls as its tries to accept these facts all at once. Oblivious to your internal crisis, the construct continues.

“I am D.A.V.I.D. It is my duty to distribute these sweets whilst Master Sterling is away. He has also indicated that I am not to let anyone into the dorm whilst he and Master Liesmith are out.”

You shift slightly as the machine turns to look behind it, drawing your gaze into the college dorm room. Books are stacked in neat piles throughout the limited space, a wooden desk covered in what look to be engineering designs, mathematic papers, and a variety of historical tomes sitting against the back wall. There is a small bed to one side, the blankets slightly rumpled but overall made up nicely. It is with mounting shock that you notice another mechanical canine, this time without golden accents, at rest on the rug beside it.

The second creature turns its matching black eyes on you, their depths lighting up with blue for a moment before growing dim once more.

There are two of them?!

Your gaze falls on an overflowing cauldron by the construct’s side as you quickly look away from the second machine. It is completely stocked with chocolates, candy, and a few other weird trinkets you can’t quite get a glimpse of. Despite the strangeness of the evening your heart leaps in anticipation.

D.A.V.I.D follows your eyes and tilts his head again, making a faint hissing noise as he does so. “I see you have found the candy. Please, help yourself to a few pieces. Master Sterling has indicated that I give out equal amounts to everyone, though Master Liesmith instead insisted I only give these sweets to the best costumes.” If the dog’s face could frown, you were sure it would be doing so at this moment. “Organics are such strange creatures.”

He pushes the cauldron towards you and lets you choose a few of your favorites, then slowly backs into the dorm again, his strange voice echoing in your ears long after he shuts the door.

“Please do enjoy. We all wish you a very pleasant and safe Halloween…”

Master Sterling wishes me to give you his deepest regrets, and suggests that you come by in the morning to perhaps obtain something then, though he cannot offer any guarantees.”

His gaze turns to you again and he slowly backs into the room, his strange voice echoing in your ears long after he shuts the door once more.

“Once more, I apologize for the disappointment, and hope the remainder of your Halloween night will be more pleasant…”

Thomas Liesmith was, to put it mildly, not having a good week. College courses had never been particularly interesting, and these days the lectures were more likely to put him to sleep than actually help facilitate higher brain function. The doodles in the margins of his papers grew wilder and more complex as the days wore on.

Thankfully, however, it was now the end of October. Which meant that tonight, despite the sadness of the autumn season coming to a close, Thomas' favorite holiday was finally upon them...Halloween!

Known as a bit of a mischief maker throughout his life, this was the one day each year that Thomas could fully let loose his creativity. He adored the aesthetic of the season, as it suited his normal attire perfectly. He found the idea of ghosts and ghouls and other monstrous things lurking in the dark, all ready to pounce upon the unwary, rather thrilling. He enjoyed the food (especially since his sweet-tooth had only sharpened as he aged) and, most importantly of all, he LOVED the costumes!

This year the English major had been a bit rushed in his preparations. He'd had a paper to turn in and had spent the better part of the month working on perfecting it instead of his costume. But despite it all Thomas couldn't help but admire how everything had turned out as he looked in the mirror.

A pure white astronaut suit and helmet gleamed beneath the fluorescent dorm room lights. He'd managed to seamlessly blend jagged horns and spikes along the back of the oxygen tank, and the tinted visor was just light enough to allow the suggestion of fangs...of a long, curled tongue and burning orange eyes...to seep through. He'd even gotten Robert's help in creating a live message feed on their tablet so he could communicate only through text to speech, a feat the engineering major had been all too excited for.

Coupled with the comically large balloon knife and sewn-on red heart, it gave the costume a strange, eerie look without anyone really noticing what was wrong with it until it was already too late.

"White is sus, alright," Thomas laughed as he pulled on his gloves. Both he and Robert had been playing so much Among Us with their friends lately that the entire group had decided to dress up as one of the crew-mates from the game. While his boyfriend had picked red (of course), Thomas had spent quite a bit of time deliberating between green and black before finally deciding on white. After all, sometimes the most innocent of colors was hiding the darkest of hearts.

Thomas and Robert were not exactly going as crew-mates, after all...they had chosen to be the two impostors.

And oh, what fun it would be! Checking himself over one more time to make sure everything was secured properly, Thomas grabbed his candy bag and rushed out of the dorm to meet up with everyone outside the library.

What followed was a night full of tricks, treats, and more honest to goodness fun than the English major had had in ages. Having strategically canvased the nearby houses during previous years, Thomas knew exactly which ones would yield the best candy. Deciding to split up and cover more ground before midnight finally hit, he turned right towards the last row of houses. He couldn't wait to drag this haul back to his and Robert's dorm and begin the time honored process of swapping their treats.

Thus armed with his now over-stuffed bag and unsettling costume, Thomas set off towards his final target. Knocking sharply on the door, he sat back and waited for the occupants to show themselves.

"Trick-or-treat," he barked loudly, mouth splitting into a terrifying, toothy grin.

After a moment you hear some shuffling on the other side of the door. You sit up a bit straighter as it cracks open, the space behind it filled with dim fluorescent lights. You see a mess of wires heaped upon the floor of the small college dorm, and almost jump as the individual who steps out begins to speak.

Well...perhaps speak isn't quite the right word.

"HeLlO...HaPpY HaLlOwEeN..."

With a strange voice akin to a voice-to-speech translator, an astronaut leans over and deposits a few delicious treats into your bag. Their bright orange suit is spotless, helmet tinted so black that you wonder how they can possibly see out of that thing. You yourself catch only the slightest hint of a rather crooked grin as it speaks again, hand jerking upwards in a mockery of a wave.

"GoOdNiGhT...aNd PlEaSe...Do...YoUr...TaSkS..."

That final strange message echoing in the empty hall, the astronaut turns and shuts the door, leaving you confused and slightly terrified on it's doorstep.

For some reason, a strange grating sound fills the air and you look around before realizing with dawning horror that the vent below your feet is opening up. Something is crawling out of it...right into this hallway!

Immediately your heartbeat stutters, then picks up its pace until it is very nearly hammering itself against your rib-cage.

The thing that crawls out of the vent is terrifying to behold.

A rune-encrusted astronaut suit is broken up by numerous spikes and frills, it's pink-tinted helmet fogging up just enough to leave the imprint of slavering jaws behind. The shadow along the wall seems to lengthen, it's form snaking tendrils of darkness towards you as the vent slams shut with a metallic thud. The thing silently hauls itself up to its full height, looking down at you and tilting its head.

Your eyes water as you stare it down but you refuse to blink, uncertain whether you should turn and flee or try and stand your ground.

Thankfully, the decision is made for you. With a strange voice akin to a text-to-speech translator, the thing stutters out a disjointed string of words:

Though Halloween was her favorite holiday, Lilith had found herself at a loss for the last few years as to what costume to wear. Nothing seemed right, and her motivation to actually go out and trick or treat had been rather lacking. Between work and spending time with her family, there seemed to be no time to sit down and plan for it anyway. Although it had been sad to sit on the sidelines simply passing out the candy instead of being in the thick of things, the young cat had still managed to enjoy decorating her home and making goodie bags for visitors.

But this year...this year, things were different. It all started in August when a game she'd been anticipating FINALLY came out for the switch. Cult of the Lamb was a rogue-like adventure, where you build up your cult with followers to help you take down the old gods. It had been immediately addicting and just as much fun as Lilith had hoped it would be. She'd played for weeks straight until she'd 100% the entire game and gotten all the trophies.

But now, with her main file completed and her second, self-proclaimed "perfect run" file done as well...what was left for her to do?

Well, make a Halloween costume to turn herself into the Lamb of course!

The simplicity of the idea was what spring-loaded her motivation. All she needed were some fake horns, a flaming crown and sword, and a red poncho to match the character. Pair that with some red contacts leftover from Halloweens past and Lilith was ready to rejoin the trick-or-treating crowds!

Fiddling with her horns in the mirror, Lilith couldn't help but feel a rising, familiar excitement in her chest as she gazed upon her finished costume. If she were being honest, she was getting a bit misty eyed at finally, FINALLY...being able to dress up again. It felt as if a missing part of herself had finally been found.

"It's been so long..." Her tail bushed out gently behind her, mostly hidden beneath the fluffy wool of her costume. Brushing a paw over the white material to make sure it stayed put, she turned on the fake red flame for her crown and placed it upon her brow at last.

"Oh, I've missed this so much! I can't wait to show everyone my costume!" A purr began to bubble up in the back of her throat as Lilith grabbed her treat bag and went to join her family.

The night passed by in a dizzying haze of candy, colorful costumes, and spooky decor. Everywhere she looked there were people dressed as things she'd never heard of before, houses decorated with things she definitely needed to buy for herself for next year, and delicious treats to be eaten. It was just as she'd remembered...almost better, even, to finally be back at it after so long.

She even got a few compliments on her costume, which made Lilith purr in excitement. One young bat named William even went so far as to proclaim himself her first cultist, and offered her a rose as a token of his devotion. Blushing, she'd accepted, and they'd spent the rest of the night going from house to house together, laughing and enjoying each other's company.

But, sadly, all good things must come to a close.

"I'm going to have to make this my last stop," Lilith meowed as she walked up towards the final house. "It's getting late."

Reaching out a paw she bat at the door to knock, listening intently. Ears pricked forward, she took a deep, calming breath, straightening her crown and cape and hoisting her treat bag and prop sword high. Excited, Lilith faced the door and called out, "Trick or Treat!"
