I've always been a pretty good kid, if I do say so myself. I never had that sarcastic stage that most teens go through, I never bit my parents when I was little, nothing like that. Some dragons went as far as to say that I was a model student, although that's really not quite true. Being a "model student" requires one to be perfect, obedient, and happy. I'm only one of those three.
My parents were always pretty kind to me-- I'm not saying I was abused or anything. It's just that I wasn't-- am not-- like them. They saw the world as something to give them pleasure, while I saw it as something to give pleasure to. Unpleasant things weren't a reality to them. I came from a rich family, you see. I always had anything I wanted, as long as it was something money could buy. My parents wanted me to be just like them when I grew up-- rich, powerful, dignified, the whole lot. I didn't agree. Early on, I realized that if I wanted to be successful in life, I would have to stand up for myself and what I believed in. I wasn't going to let anyone push me around, ever again. I started defending myself more harshly than I needed to, because I was scared that if I gave in to them, they would think that I agreed with them.
Eventually, I started hanging out with the less popular, bolder kids in my class. I tried to keep it-- not exactly a secret from my parents, but I didn't think they would approve, and I was right. I guess I made friends with those dragons so that I could kind of retaliate at my parents in the only way I knew how. They still controlled my life a lot more than I wanted them to, but at school I could pretty much do whatever I wanted.
