Welcome to CSSC: the Chicken Smoothie Science Club!
In our time on Chicken Smoothie we've found loads of people who are interested in science but don't have a specific place to discuss it, which is such a shame because science is such a big part of our day-to-day lives.
Here we're making a science club for you to join, to contribute any level of knowledge you may have to discussions or even pop in and ask a question you really want to know the answer to.
Come and talk about a discovery you read in the news that you want to know more about, tell everyone what you're learning about that's really cool or come and bemoan what you're struggling with in class and we can all have a big chat about it.
You don't have to know much about science to be passionate so come introduce yourself, tell us your background, what you're interested in and come learn more about the Universe we live in!
So, to get started:
If you had unlimited funds (and people to help), what would you research or perform experiments on?
Previous questions, feel free to answer!
- What's everyone's favourite scientific discovery and why? And in a similar vein, who's your favourite scientist and why?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obligatory Code of Conduct:
All of Tess's rules and board rules apply, with the following additions and emphases:
0) Self-Policing - to mirror the scientific method of "peer review", where in science all ideas and experimental results are assessed by the community and not just a few people, this thread will be self-policing!
1) Spelling and Grammar - this forum's main language is English but we have a lot of non-native speakers here. Please be considerate and write as well as you can to make sure everyone can understand you, especially if you scientific terminology.
2) Controversial Issues - please be aware before diving in that sometimes science deals with difficult and controversial subjects! Keep a cool head. ;D
Club Members:
You don't need to be a member of the club to come and chat as there's no extra perks but if you'd like to have your name up here and a short introduction let me know in your post!
18-18 -
Atwood - Hi, I'm Atwood, and I hold a B.Sc in Biological Sciences with a focus on genetics, microbiology and animal psychology, as well as having a smattering of archaeology (Egyptology, specifically, because I always wanted to be Indiana Jones) and social psychology knowledge. My greatest interests in science are population gene flow and adaptation, in both humans and animals, and also symbiogenesis and co-evolution. My weak points are anything to do with physics, physical chemistry or mathematics in general.
Autochthon Scion - I too am at university, and hoping to be studying a PhD in Particle Physics come October, although ::touch wood:: as I don't want to tempt any of the Norns who might be watching me. My knowledge of science is limited mainly to Physics, and my interests tend not to stray far from that path, however, I do find these evolutionary debates interesting, but I have a very small interest in Biology as a whole I'm afraid!
fallinglikeastar - I'm finishing my 4th University year, studying Wildlife Biology (B.Sc.). I love wildlife, conservation, ecology, and fuzzy little animals in general. Not sure what my focus might be, and with the limited school/biology funding, I'm in a rather crowded boat with my peers because we all need these classes that can only seat 20, so who knows when I'll get to graduate and start working off the student loans.. I've also taken some math/physics/chemistry, and I am utterly astounded by the universe and the diversity of life here on Earth. I do accept Evolution, and much prefer animals over plants.
HarlequinGirl - Hello all, I'm HarlequinGirl. I'm currently in my last year of sixth form and studying for my A levels in biology, chemistry and physics. I'm hoping to go to university next September to study medicine. I have an interest in all aspects of science, (as you can see by my A level choices:P ), although I particularly enjoy biology. From the limited amount that I have studied so far, my strong points seem to be DNA and genetics, whereas my weak point is definitely mechanics (bleurgh! :P) I look forward to learning lots by joining in with this thread (:
Harpalyce - Hiya, I'm Harpalyce. I'm a biology/english student - hopefully to graduate in May with my bachelor's - and I have a keen interest in science writing. To me the gulf between people who understand and people who need to understand is way too big, especially when it comes to the field of medical science.
Jabberwocky13 - Hello, I'm Jabberwocky, and I'm a Christian who thinks evolution is a bunch of unproved balogna. (NO OFFENSE! XD sorry I had to start out with that sentence...) I'm going into high school *feels inferior* and have a love for science and learning more about the world God created for us. I love hearing why other people believe what they do and have a desire to share my opinions with others, and hope to learn more by reading and posting on this thread :]
June Bug - Hello all, I'm June Bug. I go by pretty much anything though so long as I know it's me you're referring to. :] I'm in my second year of college studying a mixture of Environmental sciences and Abnormal Psychology, though I have strong interests in things like genetics and most other biological studies as well as other branches of psychology.
Khisa -
lizzilou - Hello, my lovely fellow science nerds :D. I'm Liz, a third-year neuroscience & behavioral biology student. I'm studying to be a doctor--not sure which sort yet, but what with my being in love with brains and all I'll probably be in for neurology.
MessoPiano
mirandaciel - Well, my name is mirandaciel, my favorite science studies (so far) are zoology and hydrology (animals and water). I also am interested in the 'Big Bang' theory, combined with my Catholic religion's 'God made the world' theory. I like to thing that God had made that little 'box' of energy, and it suddenly "poofed!" and became the Earth.
Nociception - Hello, I'm Max. :] I am a third year zoology student. My interests are varied [incl. ecology, marine biology, conservation] but I tend most towards ethology/animal behaviour and evolutionary biology. In terms of the taxonomically-divided disciplines my primary interests are mammology [especially primatology] and ornithology. I'm also casually interested in botany/plant biology, paleontology, geology and psychology.
♥Reuben♥ - I'm ♥Reuben♥ (no, it is not referring to the sandwich xD), I've always loved science, and have previously considered becoming a veterinarian, and, while I've still not completely rejected this, I think I prefer chemistry to biology. So I know I'll want to go into some sort of science as a profession, but I have no idea what area.
Scarf - Hello there, I'm Scarf, and I'm a third year vet student with a casual interest in biology (mostly zoology, mostly mammalogy). I'm fascinated by all areas of science but limited on how much nitty gritty I can wrap my brain around because of my complete inability to comprehend maths. My most in-depth knowledge is heading towards being comparative medical science stuff, so that's usually where I can answer most questions. I'm rubbish at humans because we are boring though c:
SeraphWolf - "Hi! I'm Seraphwolf! I'm a doctoral researcher in astronomy, and will be doing my thesis in the area of galaxy formation. I'm interested in all areas of science though, from psychology to general relativity, and I think it's really important that people can ask questions and learn from each other. If you have any questions about physics and/or astronomy ask here or PM me and I'll try my best to help you out!"
Skye - Hello, I'm Skye. I'm a student in high school at the moment, but I am extremely interested in science, especially biology and if you count it, psychology. I'm definitely making a career out of science, but there's so much I like that I can't pick anything specific yet!
Slinkypants
smileyranger - Hi! My username is...well...smileyranger...But you saw that already....didn't you... Anyway, I am interested in all areas of science just like seraphwolf. I may not be extremely knowledgeable in all fields, but when I see an interesting post, I take that opportunity to research that post, thus expanding what I know regarding science. I am a Christian who is set firm in his beliefs, but I'm not the type that will go "lalala I can't hear you" if you believe in something else. I will listen to what you have to say and use it as more useful information so that I can then contrast different theories and beliefs.
Tom Servo - I'm greatly interested in Anthropology, which is really more of a Social Science, but I am very interested in human Evolution, so I suppose that is leaning more toward the science side. I have grown up with my Anthropology Professor parents reading me biographies of Jane Goodall ("We'd think you'd make a good.....pet photographer") and am always soaking up [practically everyone who's posted on this thread's] posts.
