Debate club is open to all those who enjoy participating in debates no matter how serious or not serious the subject of choice may be. The club shall focus on sharing debate tactics, experiences in debating, seeking a member to debate with, have regular debates on topics of interest and much more! As long as you are a lover of debating, read the rules and fill out a membership form, you are very welcome to join and participate.

As debates can very easily get out of hand, it is extremely important that we lay some ground rules so as to keep the thread free from spam and allow friendly, mature debates to occur. Keep in mind, these rules will be very strictly enforced so as to avoid getting this thread locked.

    • Be mature. - Bullying will not be tolerated at all in this thread. This includes name-calling, sarcastic remarks and in general mean-spirited arguments. We shall debate in a fair, mature way and at the end, we shall agree to disagree.

    • Everything posted in this thread should be relevant. - This is a club for debating. This does not mean you can talk about your day, ask irrelevant questions, discuss anything that does not relate to debating or post anything that could be considered spam.

    • Members who wish to debate will be evenly split. - This is in place to stop uneven sides and allow a fair debate to commence. You may end up in a side you don't agree with. As a debater, you should realise that it is important to be able to play devil's advocate and it also allows you to have good insight as to how the other side feels about the subject. Also, in a competitive debate IRL you normally get no say in what side you are on. This should not be a problem but if you cannot work with that side, please PM me and I can try and swap you into the other team.

    • *the rules as of late are currently incomplete. If you have suggestions please message me* ...

    • Whoever sees that the thread needs remade will remake the thread. There are no thread owners, there are no mini-mods. This prevents arguments and makes sure the thread is not closed. - As the one in control of the thread it's your responsibility to update and add new members. Make sure you fully understand how BBCode works.

Bear in mind: These rules will be strictly enforced. Breaking these rules will result in the removal of your membership for two months. After that period is up, you will have to resend a membership form if you wish to rejoin. If you break the rules again after that period it will result in a further period of suspension from using the thread.

This club does not solely focus around having debates, it is also available for those who regularly debate to share tips and give advice for those who want to further solidify their arguments in debates. (The advice given at the minute's focus is on online debating however they can also apply to debating IRL. This section will be a WIP, if you have advice for me to add, please share! This is what the club is here for.

    • Explain your argument and give evidence if possible. - This strengthens your argument while making it easier to understand is well as validating your point.

    • Rebuttal is vital. - Any argument left unchallenged is allowed to stand. Rebuttal is when you challenge the other side's argument and debunk it, showing it's flaws. It's better to use your own argument to challenge their argument but sometimes this is not possible.

    • You do not have to actually believe in the side of the debate you are on. - All you are doing is giving arguments in favour of that side and challenging the other side.

    • Research is very important! - To be on the winning side you must research your side. Without research, your argument will be very poor and have little or no substance. Facts and examples are far better than statistics. Generally, they are very boring. What you research should back up your argument and you should use your research strategically. Using the internet and books to look up the pros and cons of the movement is the best idea.

The way this will work is as follows: The club could have a set topic for debate for a set time span, perhaps around 2-3 months. So, all the debates within that time will be centred around that topic. Eg.

For the next two months the topic will be: Education. (The list of debates would be something along the lines of):
    • Religious Education should be an obligatory subject taught in public schools.
    • Teachers do not get paid enough money.
    • Junk food and drink should not be sold in school.
    • Schools should be educating children better on the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise.

And then for the following two month span:

For the next two months the topic will be: British politics. (The list of debates would be something along the lines of):
    • Britain is not doing enough to help in Iraq.
    • The NHS should go private.
    • The monarchy should be abolished.
    • Scotland should get it's independence.

There is no current main subject as the club is new and we are lacking members and ideas for movements.
