I'm wondering- maybe a bear of some sort? Or a bird of prey? I looked up big cats and they don't seem outrightly mean enough, which my dad is. He likes starting arguments for the sake of starting arguments.

Edit #2: They're a bit too...goofy? xD I'll have to re-read later when I'm less angry with him. I checked into wolverine and the unhealthy aspects fit pretty well; I'd consider him to be unhealthy anyway.

Wolverine? Bears are pretty conflict-avoidant and I don't think raptors would be so tempermental. Ratels might be even too extreme, but wolverines have the cold-environment vibe. Not empathetic and practical tend to go with animals in cold places.

I think ratels would be totally self-destructive in our society. I can't really imagine one keeping a stable job, and I don't think it'd do well in large groups. Something about your father's reliability doesn't add up either since they are hugely nomadic.
