Trying to actually get far enough along to face the end dragon in my current singles game (I usually just get obsessive with my builds and hardly ever venture even that far into the nether, and I've never gotten too into enchanting or potions)

Finally found a nether fortress but holy cow it's quite a hike from my base portal :p Thinking of making another portal at the nether and just making a new base wherever it takes me so I can just go straight back and forth.

I suggest making a shelter/base as soon as possible, along with collecting food. Its best to make a bed if there are sheep nearby so you can skip the night :P

This, exactly :)

Also, it's really helpful to make a map before you wander too far; with no 'home' command, it's incredibly easy to get lost, and on the same note, come up with some sort of system when you go caving so you can avoid getting lost down there, too. I tend to block off dead ends and already explored areas so it's easier to find my way back: signs come in handy, too.

Also keep in mind that in singles, creepers will destroy things and leave a crater when they explode, fire will spread to anything flammable if it's too close, and anything jumping on crops will uproot them. All of those things are generally disabled on servers by default.

i would also say to start out on peaceful so you can get used to everything, then change it to a difficulty once you've gotten familiar with everything.

This.

Also, if there's no way to make a bed, on Peaceful setting you won't have to worry about monsters. On any other setting without a bed, have a one-block slit in the wall of your house (unless you've taken an empty villager house, most of which have windows), so you're able to see outside and tell when morning comes. A door works just as well, though your view is limited. The one-block-slit is preferrable if you happen to spawn on or near an island without trees.

A house does not actually have to be monstrous; there only needs to be enough space for a bed, a small chest, a furnace, and/or a crafting table with enough room to still move around a bit, so approximately an area of three-by-three blocks with a height of two to three blocks from floor to ceiling. This greatly decreases the odds of monsters or other mobs spawning in your home; in large houses mobs can spawn and it becomes rather irritating when an Enderman or Creeper tries destroying your house.

It's preferrable not to build a house of wool out in the open, because lightning from storms can burn it down if it's struck.

Hope these little house tips helped!

When I play singleplayer, my first priority is food. If you're going to eat meat, make sure to leeave at least two of each mob so you can breed them later.
Chickens are good because they lay eggs and you an make automatic chicken farms later.
Mess with gamerules if you want. You can easily prevent creepers from breaking blocks when that happens.
I generally carve my first house out of a hill, or make it just underground. That way you wont have to waste time gathering and building, and you also have a chance of finding coal and iron while digging.
Make a mineshaft in your house. That way, you'll have something to do at night.
another thing! Due to mob spawning mechanics, mining at night is safer than at day! Silly minecraft parody song lies!
You can also make a long straight two block deep pit full of water and go fishing for food at nigh at.
And listen to what everyone else has said, because they bring up great points, too.

(As for houses burning down because of lightning, that's rare. There's a low chance of lightning actually hitting your house, and even if it does, the rain puts out the fire most of the time. Not to mention, if it's night you can sleep and the storm will go away. Not saying your flamable house wont goo up in smokendurring a thunderstorm, just saying it's unlikely c:)

Does anyone wanna play minecraft with just 3 people? It seems like it would be fun and I wanna try out a more singleplayer type of server but still have other people play often with me. To bad I don't know how to make a server.
