I like the idea of the avaliable option to pay for breedings but not so much customs. I worked my butt off to get Joker and it doesn't seem right to just allow rare customs to be bought. If they aren't rare customs, then I wouldn't mind at all because they wouldn't have the special traits that were rewards for the 200 challenge. I'd rather you open the challenge for other users rather than offering customs.

Admittedly, I would prefer the challenge coming back over paid customs coming into the picture. But horsy has stated there will be other ways to earn customs, not just paying for them, so maybe the challenge could be one of those ways? Not to mention something for Easter *excitement*

I personally don't see a reason why skelly/roan/'special' equids should be kept rare, so I suppose that aspect of buying customs doesn't affect my decision on the matter. I like them because they're pretty, not because they're rare.

After reading through everyone's replies, just about everything that i had on my mind and in my opinions has been said. Which leaves my judgment, and that is neutral, leaning slightly on the positive side. I really like the idea, but it might cause a fight within the community, and gosh knows we've already had plenty of those on minor scales. <3

Ultimately, it is your choice horsy, and seeing as i have no real life, and i spend 90% of the day on my butt at my desk waiting for something to happen with WMEs, im pretty sure i'd stick with the change and conform to its new ideals, should it happen.

If I auctioned double and single event/special custom equids for USD/Deviantart Points (Via deviantart not CS) what would your reaction be?

I never opposed the idea of Horsy making a profit off of her own species so I see nothing wrong with this idea.
It'd give me a use for the DA Points I've accumulated, I've been wanting an Appy but of course, that isn't something I can just ask to have made as a member of staff. I do work hard but I don't think I work hard enough to have earned something like an Appy. I don't work nearly as hard as Ghost or Folk or Kita does... I've been so lazy lately, shame on me oversleeping...

I'd be fine paying for a custom or two if I really wanted it, even if my money is limited to what I can dig up drawing and whatnot. I wanted to start charging DA points for my art anyway.

I have no objections to this idea, so this has my support.

Also, I'd like to thank everyone for responding so civilly and respectfully. This has ot be one of the better discussions we've had on the board that could have spiraled out of control, Thank god it didn't, I have a headache this morning from being kept up all night. I don't think I will ever actually win a custom there are to many of us and a rarity of customs. It's not like you only going to be able to buy one. I feel like it will be more even plus for people who don't have money you can always wait til your birthday or something ? I also don't think horsy would change a lot if money for a custom I mean. There fake. and a lot if you pay money for art of your equids how is it much different for a actual Equid custom ? I think it's a great idea. Also if horsy makes money of us she could put the money into other Equid things to us hey you never know horsy might be a millionaire one day sorta like WEBKINZ ? Could have have her own Equid website like Horseisle or star stable etc and everything?! Look at the big picture guys! Think about it a little more this way people who really want a custom as a dream WILL FINALLY GET ONE!!:D just don't over think about it. If you don't want to pay money you don't have too? It's not like your forced?

Last year I was toying with an equid site, where there were games, like equid dress up, colour in sheets, oekaki, etc. As well as forums, etc. But I was worried that a lot of money and time would go into something people weren't interested in.

I was thinking of maybe using the money to help set up a website dedicated to commissioning equid art (or art of other characters if you organise it privately) so people could sell sculptures, etc. So kinda like etsy for equids. So the money would be used to benefit the community as people could set up profiles and advertise, etc.
Obviously the above ideas need a lot of thought and organisation and a lot more more funds then originally planned.

Like I said, I am dipping my toes in the water. I want to bounce ideas off people before going full steam ahead.

I might set up another topic for suggestions rather then spamming the fanclub, so people can put in ideas and others can comment on them. There seems to be a balance in the comments, and as long as there is no clear yes or no the answer is no customs. I need a good amount of yes's before the decision is yes.

This is a even bigger step then the lineart so it will definitely involve you more.

I just want to be able to give something physical back to the artists, rather then just customs. You can't eat equids and any money we raise will barely cover the time the others put into equids.

Jay I think you've done a great job, really. And maybe you haven't been as active because the community hasn't been disputing things very much. I really do enjoy this community, that's why I wish everything would work out to make everyone happy.

I'm personally all for it, but of course things need to be tweaked and what not. Also, I really would die for another opportunity such as the 200 equids challenge.

As far as paying for stuff with real money, id be out because not only does my husband and I have a Newborn on the way (3 more months to go! Yay!!!!) but we also have two more young children. (His kids, my step children which I claim as my own:3) so money would be out of the equation for customs/breedings for me, but I would Definately still love to be a part of the community if it comes down to that. Lol


I agree that Horsy and the artists deserve something besides just art, but art and virtual cookies would be all that I could give them right now. XD

For the ones who just wouldn't have the extra money, Maybe through the games you mentioned,(I'll use Wajas as an example, not saying use their site. XD) Wajas or some site like that, the member could eventually be able to earn enough points/credit/whatever to where they could trade them in for a custom or a breeding? I don't get on Wajas very much, so don't hold me to that points for a custom thing, but I believe they do something like that??

Late to the party, but I have read through everyone's replies and have come up with my thoughts.

the number one reason I love wmes so much is that it is fair to everyone. People who have money to spend aren't hoarding all the breeding, customs, and special/rare customs like in other species. I have seen what bringing money into adopts like this does. It ruins them for people who do not have money to spend of things like this. I remember horsy saying wmes were meant to be free which was why the payment for breeding was taken away. Someone mentioned people could wait until their birthday to get money to use on customs. No. I'm an adult, I don't get money for holidays. I have bills to pay. My son to feed.

I don't think it would be fair at all for people to buy customs. I know how hard the artist's work for them, and also how hard we work on the 200 challenge to get them. I like how rare customs are here. Other species they are given out like candy and it's not fair to those who work for them. Same with breeding. Those who pay will hoard the breedings.

I also say no to a raffle or donation pool. People who donate a lot of money to a raffle might walk away with nothing. and a lot of people just don't have the extra money so it's just not fair in anyway. If people want more breedings, maybe we should add a couple more artists who only do breedings? There are well over 100 people in the community, and only 3 artists who actively do breedings. I think to accommodate the growing community we need more staff, just like in a real world business.

I think wmes are perfectly fine how they are. Bringing money into this is just asking for everyone to fight and turn on each Other. I'm not rich and I will not stand by and watch people who have money strut around with 20 customs and get a breedingevery 2 weeks, while i sit and just cross my fingers that I get a breeding slot and then working my a$$ off to earn a custom.

So, in short:

more chances to win/earn a custom (opening a new challenge, having more contests like the Valentine's contest, events like Christmas, etc)

I'm pretty sure the breeding slots for payment were to be added on top of free breedings, not replacing them? Forgive me if I'm wrong guys ^^

While I can see how it would be upsetting for those of us who can't afford a custom to see others fawning over theirs, I also think it's important to give back to the artists. Sure, not everyone can pay for a custom, but those who can are probably more than willing to do so. Not to mention how close people are in this community, I could definitely see players paying for a custom for their friends. It isn't as clear cut as 'people with money get customs, people without money don't'. I know that, if given the chance, I would want to give back to the wonderful people I've met in this community.

I'm also pretty sure there would be limitations on how many customs you can buy, maybe a limit of 3 per year, with one being 'special'? Just a suggestion so that the custom purchase windows aren't always clogged with the same people.

I agree with skyyfox about how customs should be earned, and about how hard the artists work to earn them. But opportunities to win a custom are few and far between, and most chances only award them to 2-3 members of a HUGE community (the 200 challenge being an exception). And on the artist's side, they're putting in a lot of time and effort to give us equid designs for free. That's time out of their day that could have been spent earning money to take care of themselves. Just because a lot of us would love to be an artist for equids doesn't mean it's an easy job; it's time consuming and takes up a lot of energy, and I personally believe they deserve more compensation than a custom of their own.

Just popping in again because I've seen in mentioned a few times, I do really like the idea of the 200 WME challenge being opened again, even if the number is raised. I've been waiting for it to open because I would very much like to enter and I think it would be a better way of letting people earn customs with hard work rather than buying them.
