Why is it that all the important stuff around here happens while I'm asleep? xD
So after reading everything (kinda), I think I've come to a decision. I like the idea of the donation pool A LOT. It lets people donate what they can, rewards everyone with more chances for donating more, gives the artists some profit (trying to make money as an artist can be rough, especially on sites like CS), and people are able to win customs. It's like a community effort to raise enough money for a certain amount of custom opportunities. It also means that everyone has a chance to win, unlike in auction scenarios where only those who can pay a huge amount will benefit (I know these auctions will get high, the Kiamaras that are auctioned on DA are already crazy expensive)
The only thing I don't like about it is that it would only happen every so often. I think once every 2-3 months would give people time to raise funds and set a schedule so that people aren't rushing in to get their points donated for the current one since the next chance will be so far away.
Also, I think that if paid customs become a thing, custom options for those of us who can't pay should come along more often. The 200 challenge was a great idea to give art back to the community and earn a special equid - I was, unfortunately, mostly absent from CS when it took place, and would have loved to participate.
As for paid breedings, I'm mostly indifferent. I'm in no rush to get breedings done, so my opinion may be less valid than others who have a ton waiting in the wings, but I personally see no issue with having paid slots accompanying the free slots given out. Like I said earlier, I'm all for profit going back to artists - these wonderful individuals have spent hundreds, maybe closer to thousands of hours creating art in the form of equid designs for the community for free. In the workplace, that kind of dedication would warrant payment. I think that paid breedings are a step in the right direction for making things a bit fairer for the artists and helping those of us with huge breeding lists to narrow things down a bit. The 100 point mark seems about right for a breeding as well, and people can choose to pay more if they want more than 3 traits passed on, with a cap of course.
I don't support paying for adopts however, as I can see the animosity it would cause between members of the community. People already get very upset (myself included) when someone else wins an equid they've fallen in love with. However, it's a bit easier to get over it because that person worked just as hard as you did. Tossing money into the equation could potentially cause a shift in the community where those who openly pay for equids aren't treated as well by the non-profit equid lovers.
Adding on from Birch's comment (I'm so happy to see you in the fanclub Birch!) I like the idea of a $20 custom. It's not too high an amount that people can't afford to earn it through art, and it won't break the bank for those of us who can afford it. It is also the usual price when commissioning someone to design a character for you, though artists would only have to transfer your design, so it's generous to the artists as well. Perhaps to keep special equids rarer (since that seemzs to be a concern), they could cost $30? A 50% increase in price for an increase in rarity. in the case of double special customs though (roan skelly, valentine drag, etc), I feel like those should be the ones reserved for raffles and contests and such. As for consolation prizes for raffles, maybe everyone who enters can add an extra breeding slot onto any one of their equids (unless it's sterile of course)? It would be something to keep track of, but wouldn't be too difficult to confirm with a bit of digging.
So to sum things up, I've made a little list which (hopefully) includes everything.
I support
-paid breedings on top of free breedings
-donation pool
-more opportunities for customs, whether that be through hard work or through donation pool events
-set price for regular and single special customs
-extra breeding slot as consolation raffle prize
I don't support
-auctioning customs
-selling adopts
-paying more for special breedings
