Towny is one of the most confusing plugins in the whole freekin mc world. I'd take factions over that any day.

In factions you create a "faction" using /fcreate [fac. Name] and then have members join your faction.

Basically, a Towny server is a server with the Towny plugin.. cx
Towny is (obviously) a plugin that allows players to create towns. There's a mayor (which is usually the player that creates the town, unless they step down from that position, and they give it to another player.), assistants (chosen by the mayor), and then the residents. There are plots, which each resident can build their houses on, and the mayor can build whatever they want. For example, like a town garden, or horse stables.

Inside of towns are protected, no PvP, no mobs, non-residents can't build/destroy. Unless the mayor has the perms for all of that turned on. Unfortunately, in Project Eden, mobs in towns are forced on. If you have a plot, the only person that can build/destroy on it is you and the town mayor.

I like to think of Factions as a clan. Its a group of people who live together and claim land as their own, with other factions being neutral, allies, or enemies. If you read Warrior Cats the system is basically like the clans when it comes to Territory, leadership, etc.
