I'm pretty sure that anime companies ask the artists to make songs for a particular anime. They'll tell the artist a brief summary of the main concepts in an anime and then the artist will write a song that will fit. To me, it seems impossible that anime companies buy the song for a series after the artist has already written it, because as you say, it simply can't be a coincidence that they fit as well as they do.

current top anime(s) on my waiting list:
dangan ronpa
durarara!
deadman wonderland
psycho-pass
where should i start?
i've finished off haikyu!'s current eps from my waiting list, and now i am stuck in the gutter.
if you do suggest i should start a certain anime first, i would like a pretty legit reason to accompany your opinion.

I vote for either Psycho-Pass or Durarara.

Reason being that those are the two I've seen and can vouch for. Psycho-Pass was more engaging to me. It has a villain that one simply has to admire because he's that evil, good character development, nice music, suspense, and a good plot. That being said DRRR has a pretty nice plot to, but for me, it didn't come together until the end when my jaw dropped. I had a harder time getting through DRRR because the two most interesting characters to me: Shizuo and Izaya, were side characters. Still, the plot was interesting and the story moved along rather nicely.
