Titanium/Golden wrote:Titanium Shield, one of twenty colts in his group, was holding his head high and staring ahead with fiery red eyes. He'd received a request to try out for the Royal Guard, and deciding to follow in his mother's hoofsteps, he'd agreed. The mares and stallions lined up on either side of him looked nervous or determined, and he noticed with a flash of pride that he was amongst the tallest of the group.
"Somepony looks excited."
Titanium looked to one side and saw one of his friends, Starfall, smirking back at him. The older Unicorn stallion prodded his shoulder, shooting him a wink. "I wonder who our instructor's gonna be. I heard they assigned us a real tough one." He mused.
Titanium nodded. "Yeah. Who knows, could be anypony. Maybe even Shining Armor himself!" He exclaimed, eyes starting to glow excitedly.
Starfall rolled his golden eyes. "Yeah, Prince Shining Armor is gonna teach some new recruits. As if. But imagine if-" He was cut off when the door suddenly slammed open, and the sudden noise made everypony in the room jump and look to the door.
Standing there, was an aged mare that was all too familiar to Titanium Shield.
Choconator glared at the recruits. "ATTEN-TION!" She hollered, the sheer volume of her voice making many of the ponies press their ears flat to their skulls. She limped over and stood before the first pony in line, a Unicorn mare who looked terrified for her life. She gave the mare a judging look, and the skinny Unicorn drew back slightly, lifting a foreleg in case she needed to run.
Starfall looked at Titanium. "That isn't... Choconator, is it?" He asked quietly.
Titanium stared at his mother with very wide, very frightened eyes. "Oh buck me..." He replied in a whisper, ears dropping as his legs started to shake. He quickly went from the determined, brave guard to a young colt quaking in his golden shoes.
Starfall snickered quietly, but Choconator heard. She hobbled over and drew herself up, nearly bringing herself to his height in the process. "DID I SAY YOU COULD LAUGH, RECRUIT?" She demanded loudly, narrowing her blazing red eyes.
Starfall stared into her eyes, and swore he was looking into the fiery pits of Tartarus. "N-No ma'am, apologies ma'am..." He replied quickly, staring fearfully at her.
Choconator drew herself back down and started a slow march down the line of mares and stallions. "NOW. As most of you seem surprised to see a pony like me, let me make one thing very clear. The mare who sent those letters to your houses, well you're lookin' at her. I'm Choconator, or you might know me as Captain of the Royal Guard," Many awed gasps filled the air as jaws practically hit the floor, "Yeah that's right. They let a tiny, old and crippled mare take charge of this. Well, I wasn't old and crippled when they put me in charge, but now I am. Ya see, I can't fight much anymore. Not with this bum leg," She indicated her bandaged up hind leg, "So I get to train recruits. And you, you unlucky bunch of spineless cowards, are stuck with me." She smirked a little and stopped, walked a bit away from the line, before turning and looking at them all,
"Any questions?"
A golden-brown hoof raised in the air. "M-Ma'am?"
Choconator looked at the short Pegasus colt. He was a bit taller than her, and she could clearly see the muscles going along his body. He had a raggedy deep green mane with a golden stripe going through it, and his eyes were orange. "Yes, recruit?" She asked, stepping over to him.
The stallion gulped a bit. "If you are... Um, crippled... You can't fight, right? C-Can I still fight?" He asked timidly, bowing his head slightly.
Choconator turned her eyes downward and noticed that his right forehoof was bandaged up. Judging by the black fur lining it, she could guess that he'd hurt it in a fire. She looked back up into his eyes and placed a hoof on his shoulder. "I never said I couldn't fight. I'm just not as fast as I used to be. Keep strong, I have a feeling that you're gonna go far kid." She told him honestly, smiling softly.
The stallion stared at her for a moment. "T-Thank you ma'am..." He replied, eyes welling up slightly.
Choco smiled and drew away, turning her back for a moment. "I WANT TEN LAPS AROUND THE TRACK. NOW!" She ordered.
Twenty hooves snapped to salute. "MA'AM, YES MA'AM!" Twenty voices shouted in unison, and then they all took off.
Choco sat back and watched as they ran. Her eyes travelled to her son, Titanium, and she smiled softly. "That's my boy..." She murmured to herself, watching as he used to his wings to gain speed. "NO WINGS SOLIDER!" She shouted, and his grey wings instantly snapped back to their sides as he stumbled slightly in surprise. He turned and their eyes met, red meeting red, and she just smirked mischievously at him. Then he turned away and kept his eyes forward.
What surprised the old mare most was that the crippled stallion was quite fast. He was struggling, but he was one of the leads. He was even ahead of Titanium, and she knew that her colt was quite the runner. She kept her eyes on him as well, wincing every time his bad leg would shake violently as he ran. Poor colt... Having to deal with that, and he's so young. He looks like he's only abotu a year older than Titanium... She thought to herself.
Titanium was amazed that the stallion his mom had been talking to was faster than him. He was a few ponies ahead and to the side slightly, but he was still incredibly fast for somebody with a crippled leg. Even Choco wasn't that fast, but then again her entire leg had been injured and not just her hoof. He looked at the stallion out of the corner of his eye, feeling bad at the evident expression of pain on his face.
Then the stallion's leg buckled.
Choco shot to her hooves, ignoring the jolt of pain that went through her leg as she did. "Oh no..." She staggered as fast as she could over, watching as the smaller stallion stumbled and fell. But she stopped dead in her tracks at what happened next.
Titanium saw the Pegasus fall and his instincts kicked. Without even thinking about it, he dove forwards and covered the smaller Pegasus with his own body, feeling hooves trample him as he did so. He let out slight grunts of pain each time a hoof came down on him, but he kept his thin forelegs wrapped around the stallion until they stopped. He looked up again after to see that each recruit was gaping at him from somewhere up ahead, while his mother looked down at him with worried eyes.
Choco could already see the bruises forming along her son's body. "Y'ok there Titanium?" She asked worriedly.
Titanium stood up, though slightly shakily. "Never... Better..." He gasped out. He looked down to see the stallion still lying between his forelegs, staring at him with wide eyes. He smiled slightly. "Name's Titanium Sheild, you?" He asked, reaching a hoof to him.
The stallion took it in his bandaged hoof. "G-Golden Buck. T-Thank you for s-saving me..." He offered as the taller Pegasus pulled him up.
Titanium smiled. "Nice to meet you!" He replied.
Golden blushed a bit and smiled. "Y-You t-to." He agreed.
