The Mane Ponies are actually pretty much the only ponies I know so far -.- I blame my mom for not buying Netflix so I can watch every episode. The only ones I know that aren't the mane ponies are Apple Bloom, Zecora, Big Macintosh, Granny Smith, and..I think that's it. Wait, and Princess Celestia!

I'm personally for it, in the future. Moat shows grow with the audiences, right? This is just that. Look at Glee. If MLP could get to those sane standards of openness eventually, it'd be amazing for their main fans.

If you look at art and fanfiction, straight shippings are relatively rare. I doubt if Hasbro made fanon canon they'd lose many older members. Sure, they may lose a few, but the number of people that would support it would be outstanding.

Personally, I dont understand the "what if non straight ships were canon" argument. The show really only has a couple canon couples (the Cakes, the Oranges, etc) and even these ponies act as parental influences. If they had to "censor" Derpy because of upset parents, imagine what would happen if they had made ponies homosexual? The creators would get sued, I'm sure.

I don't think it was parents upset about Derpy, it was offended fans that made a big deal about it on the internet. When the writer of that episode has a special needs child. And "derp" is and never was a slur against handicapped people.

Gay ponies probably not going to happen. Yes, we live in a time where homosexuality for the most part is accepted (and I'd argue to an extent mainstream with shows like Modern Family and Glee) but let's be honest here; we're all fans of a thirty minute commercial for toys. That's what MLP:FiM is when you boil it down.

And money talks. Hasbro is not going to be controversial unless they can be sure their income isn't gonna be hit by it. It's not a matter of if they lose money by having canonically gay ponies, it's a matter of how much.

It sucks, but that's business.
