You have to do a double-take when a strange black-and-blue mottled pelt dashes through the clearing, thinking a wild dog snuck in when nobody was looking. To your surprise, the newcomer is a cat! Inspired by the same gene found in dogs, merle (Me-) is a dominant gene that affects black based cats by diluting random sections of the coat, creating a mottled appearance. The dilution also alters pigmentation in the eyes, ears, and nose, meaning that merle cats will often have blue eyes, blue full/sectoral heterochromia, and pink and black mottling on their noses and ears. Red cats may have the Me- gene, but won't visibly display it, and tortoiseshells will only display merle on the black parts of their coats. Finally, double merle (MeMe) is considered lethal and cannot be bred for in CAC.
