Ah, yes. Giving a character physical/mental issues/problems/etc. are really good for creating a character. Just a warning, though, if you give your JMD a disease/state that many people have please please be sure to research it so you don't possibly offend someone~

Lunar: Ran away from home when she was thirteen, was around/lived with thieves and alcohol her whole life up until then.
Hurricane: Foster kid- moved from home to home a lot. Finally adopted when he was twelve but never liked the family.
Silhouette: Monophobia- fear of being alone. Bunch of robberies in her neighborhood when she was little and it terrified her. Always must be with at least one other JMD at all times.
