I wanted to ask...you know how the Durseys was mentioned in the fourth book about being bad relative when Dumbledore, Harry, Ron and Hermione were persuading Hagrid to teach again after Rita Skeeter wrote in the prophet about him being a half giant? I don't get it... they aren't good, but that wouldn't do anything to Harry's reputation...and Dumbledor's brother...he wasn't hurting his brother's reputation...so they aren't really helping him...

Hagrid or someone else was questioning his ability to teach because of his lineage. Namely, his status as a half-giant. That's why people started mentioning their own shameful family backgrounds. To show that it didn't matter that he was half giant.
