okay, so talking about meanings, can i just say this song is so deep lyrically? like it can have so many meanings, because (if it was written for a movie) it obviously has to apply to the movie's storyline in some way (which it totally could if that movie is suicide squad. man there are a lot of ifs). but also it applies to what's going on with the clique rn and all the exclusion bullcrap. it also applies really as speaking about new fans, because a lot of the verses talk about how screwed up the person talking is (you know, the lyrics about the psychopaths and murderers?) and i think it's fair to say that many of the people drawn to twenty one pilots have dealt with some form of mental illnesses and that those people are drawn to the lyrical content. but, like, for me i can already hear a lot of personal meaning in these lyrics and also they remind me of guns for hands with the 'Just because we check the guns at the door
Doesn't mean our brains will change from hand grenades' lyrics
anyways yes i love this song and also there are rumors that a music video is coming today????
edit: also i think we can decide that it's real and not a fanmade thing where they edited their voice to sound like tyler because a) they tweeted 'take it slow' in morse code today which is a lyric from the chorus and b) videos are being taken down for copyright claims??? so????

hi, i've been lurking this thread for a while now and have finally decided to post.
i'm not really too deep into the clique, but i have listened to most of their songs and follow a few twitter/ig pages to keep updated. anywaaaay, i found out about heathens late last night and my brain is actually exploding. i've read several theories about the song (one being the old vs new fan thing) and this one. while browsing tumblr i also found someone's idea for a music video (younger viewers are warned for it is a little dark /:) i managed to snag a download of the song and posted it to tumblr for everyone to listen to along with a download link.
to be honest i have yet to deeply connect with a song from top, but heathens appeared and practically slapped me in the face. theories put aside, when i read the lyrics they mean something different to me. i'm just really in love with this song okay ;-;

dude that music video idea though... it got me thinking. i really like the idea of the twisted people representing the clique. like i said in one of the ramblings above, i feel like a large part of what brings people to twenty one pilots (and similar bands) is the idea that there are other people who are as messed up as they are, who have the same dark thoughts as they do, ect. so, along those lines, one of the meanings that i can see in the song is almost a warning to non-clique members. like, in my head i had a picture of people being at a top concert, and the people who don't know top as well being surprised by all the brokeness around them. idk, man, im tired and have spent a good four hours playing with small children today, so i may not make sense rn.
talking about personal meanings, though, i feel. i really connect to the line 'please don't make any sudden moves, you don't know half the abuse.' this song already means so much to me, man.

also, if anyone wants to read some more background on all the rumors going on plus some interesting theories on meanings and whatnot, look at the genuis lyrics page. there are thoughts on different themes, theories about what the lyrics might mean relating to other songs and tyler and josh's lives, and interesting background information that hints at the song.
also, because im fairly certain that this song is gonna get real popular, real fast once it's released, a warning- please don't talk down on people who like it like we did with stressed out. please. already we're talking about how much these lyrics already mean to us, and they could mean just as much to someone who hears it after they become a smash hit. don't be rude- accept new clique memebrs, don't reject them, you guys.

wow, i browsed through some of the comments on the genius page and one of the comments said that at 2:51 you can hear someone (i think tyler) saying "blasphemy". so listened and you actually can hear that. i don't know how the word "blasphemy" is such a big deal with it being in the song but, how do people even hear this stuff whaaaat.
a lot of the comments are really interesting. also, rumor has it there will be a music video soon but i'm not sure omg omg.

about the "heathens getting popular" thing, it's already on the radio is some areas so i can expect to see more new fans sprouting up here soon yay c:

blasphemy (in case you didn't know, haha) was a song from.... i think no phun intended? i dunno, my brain isn't working right now, but that's exciting because tyler has a habit of recycling lyrics from no phun intended. for example, the lyrics from the super fast rap part of ode to sleep are from a no phun intended song, as is the 'i start to part to halves of my heart in the dark' lyric, which i can't remember what songs that's a part of. but the idea that he might recycle lyrics from blasphemy is super exciting because i love blasphemy with a passion. also this could be relevant because blasphemy and doubt have been prevalent themes in their music.
also, im seeing things saying the shazam has confirmed heathens as being part of the suicide squad soundtrack???
