generally i try think of things I like; movies, cartoons, songs, characters, ect;
I'll usually think on it for a while - I'm a serial procrastinator - and if i'm choosing from a film or tv programme, i'll watch it/some episodes and decide which characters or scenes I want to focus the most on, and then begin finding/making pictures or gifs that fit the theme and go from there!

If you are doing it for a movie, I could suggest searching for '[film title] movie stills' and that will come up with some images from the film, usually from iconic scenes in the movies. Alternatively, for specific characters, check the official wikipedia them and that should have official art of them which you can use.

But everyone's process is different; you might find that whilst listening to music that you have an amazing idea, or looking at colour palettes, or pictures of something help you best, there's no wrong or right, just remember that the only limit is your mind.

If you have image editing software on your computer {GIMP, Photoshop, paint tool sai - sai is more for drawing really - ect.} you can use those to get images like chocco's; you get your fonts from wherever then save them to your computer and go form there. If you don't have image editing software on your computer, I know a lot of people use pixlr, but I am afraid I don't so cannot advise upon that. I hope I've helped rather than confused you further. c:

I'm not sure if you've heard of it or if you're looking for something more convenient but I personally use gifcam, which is downloadable. There's also gyazo which you can access from your browser which I've seen people make gifs from, but I haven't myself and I'm not sure how to.

Sadly I have to avoid downloading because my computers a school loan, but I'll check out gyazo, and if not I might have a way to do it without a program (hopefully x.x)
