Offtopic: I saw 4 gerbils/rats dead at my petstore, in only two weeks.

Ontopic: that same petstore is where I took my babies... But luckily they all got sold fast. There was also a huge male there today, but I'm telling you, they don't take care of there rodents.

I'm so sorry for you! I hope you feel better fast!

Hum, maybe by poll? It would be a good way, no one will need to judge each other Hamsters and the winner is the most voted in the poll.
You can easly do one by editing the first post of this topic, you will find a lab with "Poll Creation", you will be able to open one.
The winner could be posted on the first post as well.

Sure-how do I post the winner on the front page?

Off topc: Harry, my gerbil, just died, he was lying in his cage unable to stand up. I put him in his bedding and stroked him, I was stroking him when he died. He looked very peacefull. It was especially hard losing him, because he had been with me through some very hard times. He was four years old. RIP Harry <3

It must be really hard for you!

Sorry to hear that Jani :(

I really have my heart set on breeding longhaired hamsters. I was wondering, if I bred a black banded and Andrea (only tan) would I get tan banded and black banded babies, or only tans and black banded babies?

I dont know, Im not a breeder! Maybe a more confident hamster breeder might know, but I've never breed anything! Good luck though!

I advise to study genetic and company before starting any breeding, I studied for years and then started my breeding line, if a person breeds for fun, that person is not helping anything, to breed it's important to have goals and have something to improve, responsabilitly is not everything.
A Syrian Hamster can have up to 18 babies in a litter, it's rare, but can happen, you will need 18 cages if you can't find them a home until they reach 1 month and 2 weeks (when they start fighting for real and need to be separated by cages), if you will breed to give/sold them to a pet shop, don't do it, just don't do it.
I have had Hamsters with almost 7 months and still looking for owners.

Your question can only be replied by someone who understand genetic, so, I can help you if you know who are the parents of Andrea, I want to know the colorations of them if possible, what do you mean by tan? Golden? This:
Image
?? If so, it's a Golden Hamster, the default color of the Syrian Hamster, which means that every breeding that doesn't match genetically will end in a litter of Golden Hamsters, all of them.
If she's really a Golden, to have Black babies she needs a copy of the Black gene, since the Black is recessive, which means the babies need one copy of the gene from each parent to show the color.
So, if the parents of Andrea are Black (any of them), she will carry the gene, one copy of it and if mated with one Black Banded, there will be some Black Banded babies, if she doesn't carry the gene, they will be all Golden, unless there's another gene in their blood which is recessive, example: The Black Banded could carry Cream and if Andrea was carrier of Cream as well, there would be some Cream babies, since Cream is recessive as well.
So, all I can tell by now is that the litter will be Golden, without knowing what they carry or not.

As for the pattern, which is the Banded, they can born with or without it, Banded is a dominant gene, which means it only needs a copy from one of the parents for the babies show it physically.
The most common are babies Banded, so, in most cases there are a bigger number of Banded babies than the ones without any pattern, but, it can happen otherwise as well.

P.s.: Some people think that Sable Bandeds are Black Bandeds, it's wrong, so, make sure you are really talking about a Black Banded, because it will change everything if you are talking about a Sable Banded.

This is a Black Banded:

You can put the winner on the front page just like you did with the species. :)
