Far as I know Planet of the Dead was only like Dune in so far as it was full of sand. It's been a while since I read Dune, but Dune was full of sandworms and drugs and imperialness, which Planet of the Dead definitely lacked.

Planet of the dead was more like "Pitch Black".

It's been awhile since I've watched it but besides, the small spoilers stuff, the only difference between Pitch Black and the Planet of the Dead really is that in Pitch Black the monsters (which look like flying hammer head sharks) wait until the sun goes down before they attack. Sand, stranded on a planet in a crashed ship, have to outrun the monsters with something that will make their ship work so they can escape the planet and not get eaten. Yeah that's the same story. PS for those that haven't seen Pitch Black it's not bad at all.
