I watched SAO and thought it was really good until the second arc with the fairies and stuff. I felt that it sort of reversed all the character work they did with Asuna in Aincrad. SAO II was better than the Elfheim part, but it still wasn't as good as the first part. I would say to stick around for Aincrad, but when any other game gets mentioned, leave. My friend and I had a lot to say on the plot flaws for SAO...

It gets a lot of bad reviews for various reasons, but it's actually really enjoyable.

I personally think that people dislike it on principle, because it has some characters with taboo personalities (Aka Kirito is a little mary-sue-ish, but still is nice to watch c:) etc.

It's pretty good the first time round. In general, it's a pretty good anime. Like Kaprai said, taboo personalities and a cliche romance plot comes into play but other than that it's pretty interesting. Id personally watch something else though.
