Hey guys. So I'm kinda here for advice as well as sharing my plans. :D For Armageddon in June, I'm hoping to go as Jo Grant, from the Classic series of Doctor Who. Part of the reasoning is because one of the actors from Classic Doctor Who, who was in the show at the same time as her is going to be there.
So, I'm looking for advice - mostly on the boots and wig, but also on the rest. I found a wig that's really perfect, but it costs 70ish NZD, which is rather a lot... any good wig shops that I can get cheer in New Zealand?
Thanks guys! :D

@defalt,
Nice! I'm going to be down there that weekend too. I got a badge for Saturday. God has shown mercy on me.

@*Bad Wolf*,
It is probably cheapest to try to thrift pieces. I've seen white boots like that in thrift stores before but, if you can't find any, white vinyl or pleather would be really easy to make boot covers out of. A discount Halloween store might have some clearance go-go boots you could alter as well. As for the wig, I can't really help you. I swear by Arda-wigs. This wig seems like it would fit your character but with international shipping costs, it would probably be over 70 NZD. E-bay and Amazon have cheap wigs sometimes but I can't guarantee the quality.

Arda are super good quality, but I don't justify spending that much on a wig unless it's for a comp piece. Since I'm a student who only has a part time job.
The boots will be harder to come by, I had a similar problem with finding boots for my Danny Phantom cosplay.
So I second trying to make boot covers.

I've grabbed ties from dollar stores before, and while the are a little on they shiny side, they'll probably work okay. everything else, you'll probably have to op shop for I'm afraid.

Where do you cosplay? at home and at conventions! I went to a cosplay meetup though once
Do you buy your costumes, or make them yourself? in the past i've bought them all, but i'll be making my own this year! suri alpaca from kemono friends, i already have the fabric needed!
What was your first costume? marry kozakura from kagepro, i still have it but the dress is a little small and the wig needs fixing up
What is your favorite costume that you've done? chiaki nanami from danganronpa! she's my most recent one, and the first one i did makeup for and learned how to get good photos, so i'm slightly happier with the results of that <3 i also styled her wig mostly by myself, and it went pretty well for my first attempt at cutting!
What is your favorite costume that you've seen someone else do? oh jeez i don't have specifics, i just love anyone who cosplays as characters for fandoms im into at the time ;o;

yo! as I mentioned above i'll be making my first cosplay from scratch. do any of you guys have any advice for general costume making? the costume i'm making is pretty simple but any tips would be appreciated c:

the wig is the thing i'm the most unsure about, as i don't think it's likely it'll be purchasable styled already and I don't think I'll have the money to commission it.
(and i'm not sure how to do the pompom-like parts hanging down... would I just have to make it look less pompom like and more like regular straight hair?)
if it means anything, I have polar fleece for the cream parts of her outfit, and "poodle fur" for the white trims and possibly her scarf.

Welcome.
Make up and posing are still skills I've yet to learn and master, a lot of my early photos are pretty bad. A lot of my current photos are pretty bad, just less bad. the better pictures I'm saving in a cosplay scrapbook. Chika Takami in uniform from love live sunshine I showed off at a recent picnic and I actually felt the most natural posing as her for the camera. compared to some of my others.

as for the wig, you could maybe make a pompom out of yarn and brush it so it looks all fluffy, as for attatching it, maybe a hair tie and thread? Or thread some of the fibers of the wig into the pompom, I'm really not sure. The things we do to obtain anime hair, lol.

as for other more personal updates, Almost done with my comp piece for NZCC. woo, I'm probably not gonna win anything but at least I'll have been brave enough to actually enter for once.
-
Comp piece done aside from some minor fixes and tidying work, forms are in, just hoping I actually get in.

Where do you cosplay? (i.e. at home? at conventions?) Local cons
Do you buy your costumes, or make them yourself? Half and half.
What was your first costume? Steampunk Harley Quinn
What is your favorite costume that you've done? I can't decide!
What is your favorite costume that you've seen someone else do? there are too many amazing ones that I have seen!

It is so nice to finally find a group that loves cosplay and a place where I can discuss ideas for my cosplays. I actually didn't a tiny, less involved cosplay today at a local con. It was a lot of fun! Mostly a practice run for makeup and such for my future satyr cosplay. I plan on working on the legs over the summer and hope to complete everything in time for another con here in September. I really want to go all out with this one and I have to figure out the best way to make the horns. Has anyone ever made horns for a cosplay before? If so what did you make them from and what did you attach them to? Where you able to hide the place where they attach pretty well? I really don't want a headband or stuff like that to be visible...

GLUE THEM TO YOUR HEAD!!!!
Jk, jk. That is a tricky one though... I've never done something like this, so I'm just guessing. A wig might be the best bet - or maybe a hat with the horns visable and poking out? Dunno..

My Jo Grant cosplay is nearly finished! I just need to put red highlights on the boots. I'll post a picture when I'm finished :)

Bobby pins could work in theory, alligator clips could also work in theory,

Constance is done, including all the minor fixes and tidying work, pictures are here, not completely accurate. But considering I had to work with three layers of fabric to even get close, I'm pretty happy.

That looks awesome! Great job!

I finished my cosplay the other day, all ready for Saturday. Boop I am pretty happy with it, despite it not being perfect. :D
