I'm probably not the best at explaining this, but here we go

So, when an artist puts a plumerian up for adoption, they choose a winner who gets to adopt the plumerian. But if another person does well in the competition and almost wins, they *might*, in some cases, be offered a runner up by the artist, which is often a plumerian with a design related to the original adopt.

(btw, "runner up" applies to any adoptable species pretty much, I was just using plumies as an examples)
