..

You know what, I'm done posting here.

EVERY time I post something, I get put down for it as if I'm some cruel person because I don't follow someone elses specific rules.

Where should pet rats continue to come from - sick feeders, that live for a mere two years at most and leave a bad taste in peoples mouth and make rats look like bad pets? Or good quality rats that are bred properly for longer, healthier lives. That aren't terrified of humans and risk biting, like I know all too well with the poor, terrified feeders at all of our pet stores. ;/

I am getting 8th generation dumbos from a very good freind, whom is providing me with GOOD quality rats from her own personal Rattery. She is incredible, and has helped me out a lot. She is a true breeder. She is not a hoarder - having only 20 rats of her own compared to the 40-70+ everyone else I know that claims to be a breeder has. She is helping me improve on Everything.

I have had rats in my life for a good ten years. While I am STILL learning, I am no idiot with my rats and I am very careful.

End of story. I'm done updating people on my rats here.

It is called the rat lovers club. Not the PET only rat lovers club, thank you very much.

I swear I'm going to get some pet rats someday or another.

So, to prepare myself, any tips to feeding/raising them, etc?

You shouldn't leave! I complelty agree with you. Your breeding good stock right? Not over breeding the mothers? Finding good homes for the babies? Why shouldn't you breed? Your rats are probably better than the pet store rats that look sickly, arent very tame, and end up as snake food half the time.

Don't let a couple people get you down, I may have only been on this thread for a couple days, but I can tell that your a great person to ask advice, and you can tell by your posts how much you love your Ratties, and I like hearing about them! Some people just don't like any breeding at all, they don't understand that without good responsible breeders, all there would be are the pet store rats or rats from a person that hoards/over breeds them.

Aww, don't leave Shadi! I love hearing about your breeding experiences and your rats in general! I agree with MidnightDreamer, there are just those people out there who seem to think that breeding is irresponsible and evil, despite the fact that the rats that come from experienced breeders(or even responsible breeders in training) are much higher quality and live longer, healthier lives.
I have a great amount of respect for you and your decision to become a breeder, especially since you're obviously perfectly capable, responsible, and have a good plan to bring about a successful rattery.

How am I an idiot / stupid just for questioning someone breeding?

Yes, I'm pro rescue. There is nothing wrong with that. People on this thread are mostly children / teenagers, everyone seems to be breeding, and everyone pats eachother on the back for that and supports it? What about the fact there's so many ratties in rescues, so many pregnant rats that actually need a home rather than breeding more. What actually makes a good breeder, from what I have seen, nobody knows anything about eachothers "breeding plans". All that has been said is that someone has this litter, plans breed these litters etc. How do you get from that, that they are a good breeder?

Honestly every time I post on this thread now, I know people will either ignore my posts or disagree with them. The sad thing is though, all I have said is in the best interest of the rats. I don't think I'm better than anyone else, but with all the rescues I've had, just because of their backgrounds I've experienced a lot with them.... general care, litters, health problems. So I'm sorry if I post on this thread to try and help people, that's clearly wrong or offensive in some way. Not sure how that makes me an idiot though, for being pro rescue and questioning someone that has several litters planned out for this year? Having 8 generations doesn't mean a thing if you haven't studied genetics properly, know all about litters, their proper care. What about nursing cages, from your pics it looks like you just use tanks... not ideal for babies at all. And you mentioned fleece - threads could get wrapped around the babies which is dangerous for them.

At the end of the day I started using this thread months ago because I love my ratties. I've had over 100 rescue rats from different backgrounds, tomorrow I'm bringing home a probably-pregnant girl because someone decided to let her breed with the boys despite not knowing a thing about how to care for them properly..... so yeah, it does make me angry to then come on and read this thread and see people breeding dozens and dozens of babies - for no apparent reason.

Did I ever call anyone an idiot? No. I called myself one, yes.

I do not use fleece. I use carefresh and newspaper.

I use EXTREMELY large tanks yes, but my rats come out of their cages for HOURS.

What is ideal for a nursing cage? BARS that they could potentionally get hurt or escape through if they are not big enough and can get stuck or squeeze through them and escape?

There are absolutely NO rescues in my area that adopt rats out under two years old that are under literally 60-70 dollars, I did literally an entire year of searching and very rarely do we even HAVE rats for adoption in Alabama PERIOD. None. Zero. Zilch. All there are, are sickly feeder rats.

I'm sorry I'm trying to provide good rats for people. I take very good care of my rats. Oh, and not all of mine have tanks. My adult females have a HUGE macaw cage with bars small enough for them to not escape out of. My boys have a massive ferret cage, and I have a good five spare cages as well, most BEING barred but all the bars are so wide, I prefer to use my large tanks for my babies instead. From time to time I let my rats sleep with my shirts that have my scent on it - this is usually when I clean or rearrange their cages so that they feel safe and comfortable in general. I never use fabric that could harm them. I never even use fleece. Where did fleece even COME from?

This is what I mean.

I don't mean to be rude or start anything, but do you even CONSIDER what others go through with their rats? Maybe you have a crap ton of rescues besides yourself where you live, but here we do not. I have talked to people who have owned feeder rats as pets that died a mere year and a half to two years later and it left a bad taste in their mouth - they thought all rats were that way until I introduced them to MY rats. Mine are Extremely friendly, loving, snuggly balls of floof. I've been told I have some of the sweetest rats anyone has /ever/ met before. I have taught SO many people about rats it's unbelievable and it feels great. Do you want me to just stop that because you think I'm just like everyone else breeding my rats just to breed them?

Seriously. Every single time I post something, you post something back that truly offends and hurts me. I openly admit I have made mistakes in the past, but I have corrected all of those mistakes. My stupidest mistake was using aspen/wood bedding. HORRIBLE mistake. All of my rats had allergies to ALL of it - I do not care what anyone says about aspen, SOME rats can be allergic to it, hence sneezing but looking and sounding alright. I use paper based stuff for my rats.

I am truly done with this drama. I am putting up with enough of it because someone whom I THOUGHT was my friend is saying MY rats gave HER rats some sort of virus, which is 100% BULL since mine are clear, clean as can be and so on - they WERE until they went to HER house and I got two rats from her, whom were SICK. I'm just sick of this, I'm being put down by so many people it's pathetic. The rat world is very cruel, there are true people (like yourself, I appreciate you're a pro rescuer and take good care of your rats and genually care) then there are fakes out there for just the profit.

well perhaps you should learn to mind your own business?
And it's not "helping" if your rude about it.
And in reality, it's not your problem.
And really, what you may feel is best for rats might not be what others feel.

And you might want to take in consideration how Shadisin feels
