Sapiens (saw-pee-ens) is the god of creatures within my story. He created all creatures in turn, starting with wolves, rabbits, hawks, and deer-- which were initially made to resemble his own appearance.
Though new creatures are not made in the modern times of my story, Sapiens is still a highly spoken of and respected god. As each creature dies, it is Sapiens' job to guide souls into their next bodies, continuing on the flow of life with reincarnation.
It is because of his love and care for all creatures that Sapiens has become many more times revered than Ineo, the very creator of the world, his mother.

Sapiens' base design was actually extremely random. I just drew some random creature one day and it evolved into this, lol.
I decided to later pick apart several of his parts, and make a story of creating creatures based off of his own looks-- rabbit, hawk, deer, and wolf were quite easy to get off of him. xD
His overall body shape is birdlike, except for wolf-like legs. The only part of him that hasn't been defined as another animal is his tail, which is just generic, I'd say.
His legs and tailbones are actually bare bone, although they appear to be silvery. Silver is a very important aspect in my story for reasons that I cannot tell, and is mentioned many times so I thought that this was a nice touch for him. The reason for them actually being bone is to show how he deals with both life and death.
I've thought of making his antlers silvery as well, but I've had two qualms against that and decided not to. For one, it just looks ugly, and then the fact that antlers are constantly growing and being replaced doesn't really bring out that "dead" aspect as his legs do, so matching them doesn't make much sense to me. xD

There is really only one solid religion in my story, and it all centers around Sapiens and his mother. Nearly everyone within the country Lorn believes in the two, and stories centering around them.
Belief remains very strong in the two gods as Sapiens and Ineo are both often seen by mortal eyes. It is said that Ineo can be found near the pure Lake Vale, while Sapiens is spoken of as roosting at the top of the largest mountain within Lorn, The Horn.
In addition, Sapiens is often spotted in dreams-- and in near-death experiences. Nearly all dream spottings of him are just fantasies, but, while some have doubts, true near death experiences are actual glimpses into the god's realm, a place between life and death (note, there is no heaven or hell in my story, only life, between life, and life again.)
Though this has never been confirmed by anyone within my story, the only true way to tell if Sapiens has been truly seen by a person is his eye colour.
All false meetings with the god will show eyes anywhere between the colours of green and gold. True ones will always show his actual colour, red.

Wow what a creative species they look very nice do you have a skeletal refrence?

Susiron, I like the character design. Dem antlers and dem skeletal legs.. <3

NotMe, do you use a mouse for your art? Because if not, you want to try and fix your pen pressure settings. I'm sure you'll have a lot more fun then. Keep up the painting, though.

Marquee, that's so cute. Those big, chubby ears are adorable.

Courage, maybe you should try to put less effort into making it seem lit by using the background, and just add a soft glow to the flame while showing on the candle where the light is coming from. Currently, the background's a mess of blue and yellow. You could use blue for the background, but let the yellow come from the glow of the flame by using softer brushes instead of smearing it all over. I like the effect of the candle wax dripping down, though.

I hate drawing cheetahs. They're such beautiful cats but their anatomy is effed up. xD
Either way, I was trying to work more on digital painting and using different colors. I think I did somewhat well, though it looks kind of muddy in some parts. Critiques are welcome, though I'd prefer comments on the colors/shading rather than the anatomy.

---

Notme; I love your painting, it's adorable and I love the hat. x3
I don't have much to add beyond what's been said, but from what little I've seen of your art you seem to be improving really quickly. I hate trying to draw with a mouse.
Also, I love the dragon. All I can say is to try and make the lines smoother and longer, rather than a bunch of short ones. If you zoom in a little it can help to keep the lines from shaking.

Susiron; I love this character. 0.o
I love the idea that he based other animals off of himself, rather than being a random hybrid. It's a neat idea and it's executed really well. Also, I agree with notme. Hurry up and publish so we can read your story. xD

Marquee Monny; Aww, I love the little paws! Your art is absolutely adorable. <3

Courage; Very nice, it looks kind of like an oil painting. ^^
I'd say make the colors a little brighter? Everything is very smudged and it kind of dulls the colors, especially on the flame. Try adding in some lighter colors and not smudge them in too much.

@Susiron: Both images are absolutely flawless, I can't find any anatomy mistakes and his bio is very intriguing. Looking forward to see the first chapter (and the second chapter whenever you add the link)!

@Marquee Moony: Awh, she looks so precious. <3 Is it by any chance your 'sona Ivy, or is it just a regular canine?

@Courage.: I went to have a peek at your Oekaki and I was really surprised that you draw this with a trackpad! I'm a little envious that you're able to draw on a trackpad very well, since I was only able to draw with a mouse until I decided to use a tablet.
Two things I want to say is that:
- Try defining the flame a bit more and make it brighter? It's a bit dull and "stiff" so to speak. Also the flame should be a little smaller because it looks like it's going to collapse and engulf the wick! :o
- The wick is a little strange, as I never seen a candle wick with holes as they weave into together. But that's probably just me.

@wibeke: Ooh, the image is beautiful! The background gives off a mysterious and enchanting sort of aura.
--------------
I finally have pen pressure on SAI and boy, it made my life a lot easier than before.
While I was doing some quick sketching to get used to the pen pressure and play around with it, I was pretty happy about how it turned out until slowly and slowly the rest of my sketches went... odd, especially at the right side. 8D;
Yeah, I managed to do two somewhat decent sketches and the rest is all load of rubbish. This is why I should never draw/sketch on 3am; strange things happens. OTL

Monochromatic, lovely sketchpage. Don't worry about strange things happening at 3AM, that's when the best things happen.

Speaking of sketches. The lights went out and I was just sketching until they got back on.
Originally, it was supposed to be a generic woman, but then this happened..

Nex-I love the glow you gave the..plague(I assume) she's holding. The whole image is so nice and soft, it's amazing :3 The anatomy is spot on, too.

Just to stop you there-- he is not a "species", he's an individual. A species calls for there being more than one.
And, no, I fail whale at skeletons. xD -- It's hard enough for me to draw just his legs.

Nex, Wibeke, Monochromatic,
Thank you so much. C:
Yeah, I thought making the animals based off of him would be a better idea than going backwards xD -- and I hope to send the story out to a publisher soon, once I get past my paranoia of finding typos and what have you in the text. xD
I may post the 2nd chapter here sometimes soon, though. (First chapter doesn't really get posted as it's not written "visually" and isn't as entertaining, I believe.)

Ohh, Nex, that plague doctor woman is awesome! : O
I really like her design, and it's cool seeing a female one for a change.

August,
Very nice job, but I'd say try and not eyeball the reference next time, as that won't help you very much with anatomy. If you can, even mentally flip the image and draw it backwards so it makes you think. :3

Wibeke,
I'd say that the body and legs on your cheetah look a bit small, but the lighting is beautiful! The face is also very pretty. I love your use of purple for the tones. : D
Yeah, cheetah anatomy is like the hardest of all felines. xD -- they're just so lanky and strange!

I've had absolutely no inspiration to do anything related to art or graphics lately and it's really tearing me apart.
;___; I'm in a big fat rut that even gesture drawing sessions/surfing the web/reading cannot fix.

Courage. wrote:

yo! this might be redundant but I hope you don't mind. the use of colours isn't different enough. The flame is dirty and unglowy right now and using a more saturated colour will make it feel like fire. the flame is sort of stubby looking as candle fires on a wick burn upward (well that's like the principle of fire anyways but that's not the point lol) not really sideways and up. I don't have anything else to say that probably hasn't already been said by people before. It's looking good though, but what I'd also recommend is slapping in on a darker blue background. blue was a good choice but I personally think if you make it darker it will look even better in this situation. Nice job though, I dunno how you could possibly deal with oekaki cause I hate using oekaki with all my being.

I don't know the first thing about cheetah anatomy but the hind legs don't look meaty enough in my opinion and I don't think I need anatomy lessons to point that out. I also imagine larger shoulder things.. whatever they're called, a broader neck near the bottom and a longer body. If this is totally wrong please correct me because this really isn't educated rather than an artist's intuition of having a sense of what looks right and what looks wrong.
It looks really good though, I love the use of the purple... really complements the yellowish hues of the cheetah.

Thanks for the nice comments, guys. <3
Female plague doctors aren't rare, it's finding good art of them that's rare.
And I know, the hat is the best thing.

August, that looks pretty neat. I'm not normally a fan of red + blue, but you've made it work pretty well in my opinion. I like the eyepatch.
