Dude, I just looked it up and there are 4 seasons of Naruto on Netflix. But Season 4 is filler hell so we'll only count 3 seasons xD Dubbed and subbed, too.
I should definitely re-watch some old episodes for nostalgia.

I can imagine that they're equivalent to Army dog tags, minus the personal information.
As for the protection thing, I never understood why some of the ninjas in Naruto wear the forehead protector loosely around their neck, on their arm, as a ribbon/hairband, on their thigh, etc.
