yeah vehicle modes are really tough
the best I ever get is a lopsided rough sketch that I never use because its so ugly

Its to understand the parts I can use >.> Like doors as wings, or wheels as feet, etc.. I also get an idea what colors/ patterns chosen and where to put the paint job on. I don't think I could start the other way around, i'd probably fail epically! XD

I just use reference pictures of vehicles as many angles as possible

I haven't done a transformer design in a hot minute to be fair
mostly its been a lot of either
robot or heavily armored characters
so I've ended up focusing on just how a transformer would look in root mode anyway
but your way probably works better haha

I can probably get away with that if there's not multiple colors/ design on the paintjob. Mebbe >.> But each car/ truck/ plane kinda have their own curves and edges so sometimes I come up a loss trying to figure out where things go just by looking at it. The animators for any of the transformers make it look so EASY XD

And, well, I ultimately tried looking up "how to design an OC transformer" and found zip. I thought drawing Starscream would kinda help me figure out what i'm getting into. And it did! But, I had to think of what I wanted my OC to be, and Decepticons are usually flyers. So there was that, narrow it down to what aerial combat vehicles are available. Chose F16- Viper as the newest concept. Looked up its weapons, and inside out blueprints. I did a lot of research -.-* I made a sketch in my gallery of parts and where I thought they'd work, as reference. Some didn't come together at the final product which is OK. Still trying things out, it's been YEARS since I had tried drawing transformers.
Curious as what you guys have done in design or fan-art? ^^

I've done a few character designs, none of them great, recently I've mostly just done stuff for original, non-transformers characters, but I've kinda wanted to go back and try again with transformers now that I'm a little more expieranced

Same with fan-art, did a few pieces, none of them very good
I have done some fanfiction though, and that I am actually proud of, but I'm just generally a better writer than artist

LOL I tried a book on mecha, and it didn't help me much at all either XD I just like looking at their design concepts ahaaa...

You should! ^^ I know where you want to take time and venture out doing other things, but seeing improvement is an awesome feeling I love going back to my sketches I did in class and just seeing the "then and nows" every now and then. It also helps inspire me to keep drawing after having an art block.
