Just keep encouraging her to take food from you and coming out. It will take a long time. I still can't handle Pablo without him trying to run away but I don't think he will ever be that tame but he's quiet old and I recently found he gets breathing problems when stressed so I can't do so much work with him :( She should learn eventually to tollerste it :)
Sorry for my slow response time on RP's. My new job steals ALL my time. :(

Just went to the pet store.. always look at their rodents.. well..
younger large male rat. BEAUTIFUL russian-dove colored boy with a minimally marked white belly.. but..
poor thing cannot stand. he keeps falling over. it's like his body has a mind of it's own, he keeps spazzing.
I just gave him a blueberry and he's desperately trying to eat it.. but cannot without my help.
I got him for free because we all assume he's just going to die.. but I wanted to at least /try/ to make him comfortable.
He looks blind, his pupils are like.. not even there.. his feet & ears are rather large compared to most I have seen, and he's acting just like every inbred/brain damaged rodent I've gotten has. Poor guy is such a sweetie though.. he is finally warming up to me and letting me rub behind his ears and love on him.. it's heartbreaking seeing such a thing, I KNOW he won't make it long.
I'm going to try, though, none the less. He's so skinny though.. heavy breathing.. all-in-all acting unusual.
I've decided to name him Fluke.
I might get pictures up.. he's a doll.
I am not expecting him to live, but again, I just HAD to get him to at least try comforting him in his last moments.. he's covered in blood from the others picking at him.. I cleaned him up a little bit, but he's still rather messy.
He keeps angerly biting at his feet and bedding.. I'm so confused..
is this just brain damage? or is there a specific disease that causes this?
Syria is big enough to stay in with my rabbit Hoda (she still plays with the other rats but shes far too tiny to be with them as of yet.. and she legit gets along way better with the rabbit than the other rats anyway) so I have Fluke in her old temp mini tank. stretched out his entire body covers the bottom.. if he makes it to tomorrow afternoon I'll move him to a nice roomy tank I have. this poor guy almost has me in tears.. he looks like my Solace.
It sounds like the best thing you can do for him is to put him down. He seems to have severe brain damage, maybe caused by inbreeding or something like a stroke. They can recover from minor strokes, but there is always a risk that they will get another one. Strokes usually cause balance problems, but I do not think the feet/bedding biting would be caused by a stroke.

Well..
he just started bleeding from his 'genital' area.. I noticed it was swollen earlier but thought nothing of it..
I am going to try home euthanasia. Carbon dioxide.. since I cannot get to a vet for about two weeks.. and I do not want him to suffer..
*Sigh* Emily warned me not to get attached to him, we thought he'd die within an hour but we were wrong and he grew on me..
he's currently with Syria. since he's 'disabled' I'm not worried of mating. He wouldn't even be able to stand to do it..
I'm just.. I'm hurt. I love this little guy, even though I haven't had him long. He has grown on me, and is the sweetest little thing ever.
I'm going to take him out of the cage and try to comfort him while mom looks for white vinegar & baking soda so I can 'go through' with this procedure.. I wish I could just give him a sleeping pill and it be over with but its never that simple. never that easy and could cause him more harm than good..
gah.
Edit:
..
You know what.
I'm going to give him until Saturday. Going to try to get more food and water into him, clean him up and let him have that chance to 'prove' he can do it.
Despite his odds.. I feel he not only deserves this chance, but can prove everyone wrong and pull through.

Please, please, please
don't attempt euthanasia at home! Caron dixoxide is NOT humane.... he will suffer if you do that.
The only humane way to have them put to sleep is at the vets.
He'd be sedated, almost like being under anesthetic, then the vet would give the final injection.
He has to be seen by a vet. He is sick and if you want to give him a chance, he needs to see a vet
now and you need to try medicine before you go straight for PTS.
This forum is good. It would be worth posting for advice.
http://www.ratshackforum.com/forum/index.phpHe looks like he has a brain tumour to me. It's rare in babies - very rare - but from the pictures, that is what comes to mind.
Not trading.

Too late now..
He was doing really well, stopped bleeding.. except for the fact he tore one of his nails off so THAT kept bleeding.. finally got the bleeding to stop..
today he wouldn't accept any food.. I had this gut feeling things weren't right. sat him back down in the cage with Syria to rest..
got on the computer to check my messages, then went to go and take a nap.. noticed he wasn't responding.. kissed my finger and touched it to his cheek/head.. and went to bed.. woke up because Syria was literally squeaking like CRAZY and instantly felt like something was just NOT right. as soon as I took the lid off the cage, Syria stopped and hopped up onto my hand and up my arm to my shoulder. There lay dead, was Fluke in the corner.. he's still warm.. he JUST died..
Usually I would have taken my rat out of the cage before it had parted, but with him it just didn't feel right.. like he wanted to die alone.. just like with my dog - he kept pushing himself to live until we left the room, then he laid down, curled up and passed away..
I'm just.. I don't know..
I now must find another pure tan advent rat to dedicate to Fluke.. *sigh*
