So..

Just went to the pet store.. always look at their rodents.. well..

younger large male rat. BEAUTIFUL russian-dove colored boy with a minimally marked white belly.. but..

poor thing cannot stand. he keeps falling over. it's like his body has a mind of it's own, he keeps spazzing.

I just gave him a blueberry and he's desperately trying to eat it.. but cannot without my help.

I got him for free because we all assume he's just going to die.. but I wanted to at least /try/ to make him comfortable.

He looks blind, his pupils are like.. not even there.. his feet & ears are rather large compared to most I have seen, and he's acting just like every inbred/brain damaged rodent I've gotten has. Poor guy is such a sweetie though.. he is finally warming up to me and letting me rub behind his ears and love on him.. it's heartbreaking seeing such a thing, I KNOW he won't make it long.

I'm going to try, though, none the less. He's so skinny though.. heavy breathing.. all-in-all acting unusual.

I've decided to name him Fluke.

I might get pictures up.. he's a doll.

I am not expecting him to live, but again, I just HAD to get him to at least try comforting him in his last moments.. he's covered in blood from the others picking at him.. I cleaned him up a little bit, but he's still rather messy.

He keeps angerly biting at his feet and bedding.. I'm so confused..

is this just brain damage? or is there a specific disease that causes this?

Syria is big enough to stay in with my rabbit Hoda (she still plays with the other rats but shes far too tiny to be with them as of yet.. and she legit gets along way better with the rabbit than the other rats anyway) so I have Fluke in her old temp mini tank. stretched out his entire body covers the bottom.. if he makes it to tomorrow afternoon I'll move him to a nice roomy tank I have. this poor guy almost has me in tears.. he looks like my Solace.

that is horrible!! the poor baby!! I'm happy you took him in i would have done the same! Maybe despite the odds he'll live. My first rat i got from petco was free because she was incredibly old and sick. She survived about 3 more years before she passed away from old age.

Anyway. One of my females was poorly socialized when we got her weve had her and her sister for a week today! She tends to try to get away from us and freaks out when we first take her out. Does anyone have any tips on how to socilize her more? Handling her doesnt seem to do much and she wont take treats from us, she wont eat unless shes in the cage.

I would try not to fuss with her too much when she is out of the cage, like let het just sit wherever she wants and only move her if it is really needed, every now and then trying to pet her and leaving treats closeby but not in my hand, untill she tries to take them. And not give them in the cage might urge her to take what she can outside of it, and then she should get used to it a little faster.
Any other opinions are encouraged though :3

@Shadisin: Poor little guy! I hope that he will live. You're so nice to take such good care of him!
@Raven Feather: Try to lure her out of the cage, with treats or something she likes. Once she's willing to eat out of the cage, try hand feeding her. I don't know if this will work, I got it from a website. It worked for Monkey, she was scared to come out when I first got her.

Aww..he sounds so sweet but I think he needs a vet as soon as possible. He could have brain damage but he also could be very old, old rats can end up like that, I see it alot at my college where they don't look after them well :(

I hope he is okay though.

also we have a Greyhound at the kennels I work at names Fluke, just thought I'd share.
Sorry for my slow response time on RP's. My new job steals ALL my time. :(

I'm so sorry about the poor little guy, ShadiSin. Whether he lives or dies, though, the important thing is that his last moments aren't miserable.
