I don't judge it, so I don't know what Atwood is looking for. But here's my take on it;

Quality over quantity all the way. You can make a novel about a character but if it's a five page yawner about a wolf war and how this character is the last chance the pack has and how they're the chosen one, I'd skip it for someone who comes up with something more unique.

Kiki wrote:However, even if I do adore this way of adopting, it's a tad unfair to thos lacking writing skills, or those who are not fluent in the English language. But I don't have any suggestions so... =/

Again, I don't know how Atwood judges it. But I think it'd be pretty obvious if English wasn't someone's first language. For a while I was considering trying to hire people fluent in the more common languages on the forums (Which as far as I know is German and Polish.) but are completely fluent in English as well.

Smells like a second poll! I'm fluent in reading Japanese, so if anyone wants to apply in Japanese, I'll be happy to help.

Writing skills as in creativity? I don't think that's hard. Not typing in chatspeak shouldn't be a chore and if it is, then I think you need a writing tutor.

(Correct me on anything, Atwood!)

EDIT: And a poll here too! I love polls, cantcha tell?

Discuss the second poll: Should TaN hire those fluent in other languages to help with applications?

NOTE: Donations will still be in English.

Pros: It'll give those who don't speak English well a chance, it'll expand TaN's versatility in a global community

Cons: The two administrators of TaN can't certify applications are appropriate, applications would take longer to sort while we wait for translations.

As always, I voted indifferent.

What do you mean? Say if I posted a form in english, but I had trouble with understanding english (because I might be from another country) so it wasn't the best quality, how would I benefit?

I mean you'd be able to post the application in your native language (If it passes, we will have a list of languages you can post in) and we would have a translator on staff to translate it into English and it would be added to the applications for the week.

It would benefit those who are good writers in their native language, but cannot write to their full potential in English.

I say applications should be in English, simply because, when you translate something, you'll be grading it based on the translation, not what the person originally said. The translator would be earning the character, unless only direct translations were allowed, but those would probably score even worse than someone's attempts at English. Unless the person actually judging knew the language and read it in that language, I can't see it working.

Any translations would be required to be direct (I don't mind if things end up sounding a bit odd or if the word order is a little off so long as the idea behind it can be understood), preserving the original as far as possible in style and quality. It can be endlessly frustrating trying to phrase something the way you want it in a language you're unfamiliar with, which can lower the quality of someone's application significantly and result in them not getting a character even though they may have great creative ideas for it that they can't express properly in English. Many of the great artists on CS are not English and use German, Polish or other languages, so giving a character to a non-English speaker wouldn't affect whether they got art or not. I'm able to read French, German, Spanish, Italian and Norsk to some extent, so with forms in those languages I'd be able to tell if the translator had drastically changed things.

I voted Indifferent. My question is, would a translater help all that much? There's lots of online places that will do translations, (Babelfish is a good one) and while the form won't stay the same, the message wouldn't be all that different. Of course, my language skills are non-existant, English is hard enough for me. :lol:
