There was a gorgeous brown hooded rat who I was chatting to the other day in the pet shop (though he was sourced from unreliable places, according to my research). He's got a very knowing face, and seems friendly.
Another thing: consider getting a friend for your rat. Maybe there's a reason why you're not, but he'd be so much happier with a sibling/cagemate.

yeah I know, i was planning on getting him a buddy but the other rats were females and I play with my little buddy a ton so he doesn't get supper lonely though I know he would like the company of his own kind. I am also only allowed to have one. I plan on getting him a friend later on in the future, I know how to introduce them and whatnot.

You are much better getting him company now, the older he gets, the harder it will be to introduce him.

I know how to introduce rats, I also know it is harder to introduce with age and I made everyone aware that I am NOT capable of owning another currently.

It's just unfair to keep him alone because you're apparently not ready. He's a baby, he needs a cagemate to play and interact with. Doesn't matter if you give him a lot of time, you're not a rat, you can't do the same things with him.

We will just have to agree to disagree. I don't know how good the rescue center person was, but I find it strange if she has had over 30 years experience that she didn't even socialise him properly.

Fancy rat means pet rat, that isn't an ear type.

It's top eared and dumbo, and he is a dumbo. There is no such thing a mix.
He is definitely a dumbo - not all dumbos will have the exact same shape of ears as eachother, but his ears are round, on the side of his head.
Top eared are obviously on top of their heads.

Annabel's finally all over her cold and feeling great. I just put her in with the other three, she's loving the the big cage cx
The other girls are liking her so far (then again they always do like it when they get a new buddy) and I don't see and problems with them. It's pretty smooth so far. Now I just need to hope that it just stays that way.

There cannot be a mix between dumbo and standard ear. Dumbo ears are genetic, you either have dumbo or you don't. The genes to cause dumbo are either there or they are not, and if they aren't, the rat is standard eared. Some dumbos have ears of different shapes and some are farther from the standard than others, but they are still dumbo rats.

Nimrod, Rachael is right. Rats really, truly NEED company. I had one of mine alone for a time (a long time ago) and he very nearly died. He quit eating, lost weight, slept all the time, and wouldn't play- he was just a teeny baby! I got him a buddy and he turned right around. He's now nearing his third birthday. His old buddy passed on, as did one of the other rats he lived with, but he now lives with two other males. (and intros were horrible! He was 2 at the time and attacked the newcomers. Took forever to get them to be peaceful) I've also rescued a lone rat and she was neurotic, clingy, and just all around miserable. It's not fair to do that to your pet.

Hi all, it has been a while since I've posted here, but I need the support of fellow rat lovers.

Today I found my camera (I've been using my mom's since it's much better quality) and on it were loads of my rats, especially my very first one who I was sooo attached to. But she died May 7, 2011. I just miss her sooo much...I've never had a rat like her and my current boys are no comparison.

Don't get me wrong, I love all my ratties, but I've never attached to any them like I did my very first one. I miss her so much...

I cleaned the cage earlier today and for once, Sailar actually let me hold her without squirming. I was very pleased by that. <3

and off subject, but I 'rescued' three mice.. one of which has a frizzy/long hair coat. ^.^ they're so itty bitty compared to my girls. I adore them.

She doesn't just work with rats pluss the person was a volanteer so socialising wasn't her job, they gey people to come in and cuddle the rat.

There is, if dumbo's and top eard are different types then they can be mixrd to make a mix between the both. I'mnot saying he is a cross breed, just he is a mix between the two. The pic i put up isn't a good pic but if i cpare him to my previous dumbo rat pairs and my two fancy rats I own he has his ears on the sife positioned like a dumbo but shaped more rounded like a fancy rat.
Sorry for my slow response time on RP's. My new job steals ALL my time. :(

If you had a litter that had for example, a top eared mum and a dumbo dad, you're not going to get a mixture of them. You'll get some dumbo, and some top eared. There is no genetic 'mix', they are one or the other, so what this person has told you is wrong. If you google it online, you'll find things saying the exact same.

They can't mix because you cannot have the genes for both. You can have the right combination for dumbo, or the right combination for standard. It's impossible to mix them.
