Kopa's Return:
Kopa yawned and stretched, then looked around. He was an adult now. He had a mane, a full mane, like his father's. No, not as thick. More like Scar's.
In fact, he grew more Scar-looking by the day. His slender build, sly like a fox, was like Scar. His snout stuck down much like his great uncle's had. There were a few characteristics, though, that still clung to his father and mother. Even his grandfather, too, partailly.
Kopa viewed himself in a puddle and sighed. His fur was the perfect mix of his father's and mother's. A light, mustard-yellow. His eyes were the same blue as his mother's. And more importantly, his mane was the color of her tail tuft.
He had numerous scars from battle which he wore proudly. One over his eye. A long slash mark near the base of his mane and his shoulder. Numeroud facial and leg scars.
Kopa didn't live in the Pridelands. He hadn't, not since he was much, much younger. Zira had kidnapped him from his hapy home and hidden him far, far away, where she knew no one would ever discover the cub's body. He had slipped into a coma after being badly beaten by her, causing her to believe he was dead.
The cub had climbed out and lived on his own since then. Now, he was a very strong, sturdy male with a heart colder than stone.
He wasn't entirely on his own. Though he considered himself to be a rogue, he did travel with three others. Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. He was proudly their leader.
There'd been more and more reports of a rogue lion and hyenas in the PrideLands, and more and more lionesses had gone looking for them. they hadn't been discovered, but their previous dwellings had.
Kopa remembered Zira's words, cold, cutting like a knife.
"Long live the king."
He shook his head, but the words kept buzzing around in his head.
"Goodnight, sweet prince! Forever..."
"No!" He screamed in terror.
"Simba...I hope you can hear me...this is for Scar! You brought this upon yourself!" And then, she made the final death blow. Except it hadn't killed Kopa, of course.
Kopa remembered vague faces of the lions he'd cared for, the ones who'd cared for him. His father. His mother. Vitani. Kiara. No. Vitani was a traitor. Everything she'd ever told him, everything she'd ever done to him was all a lie. a cruel, cruel lie to trick him into Zira's plot. Never turn your back on an outsider, Kopa. He wished he'd listened. But 'Tani's different! 'Tani is good! He'd insisted. Him and his good heart. Now, he didn't care. Vitani could die before his eyes and he'd feel nothing. His father could die before his eyes, and he'd still feel nothing.
But that wasn't the truth. Secretly, he still cared for all of them.
That same morning, Nala was leading her hunting party through the Pridelands with Vitani and Kiara at her sides. Nala had inherited the hunting parties after the death of Sarabi. She led them proudly.
"Nala, Kiara!" She called out. "I'm going this way. I smell something."
"Just be careful," Nala said, then led the lionesses away from the area.
Kopa ducked down and hid behind some grass. He sensed that someone was coming, but he didn't know who.
Vitani came into view. Kopa didn't reckignize her. Not in the Pridelands. She would never be in the Pridelands, so he figured her to be another linoess.
He jumped out in front of her and growled, "Who are you?"
Vitani crocuhed down, teeth bared. "Tell me who you are first!" She ordered.
"No." Kopa said, stubborn, squinting his eyes.
"Stubborn, I see? We'll fix that..." Vitani said. "Now. Tell me. What's your name and where do you come from?"
Kopa gasped and stood up like normal. He remembered...
---
It was one glorious morning, the first day they'd met as cubs. Kopa was roaming the Pridelands and Vitani was hunting a beetle. That's how he'd accidentally stumbled upon her.
"Hey! You ruined it! I was going to catch that!" An angry Vitani shouted.
"I-I'm sorry! I didn't mean to-it was an accident!"
"Sorry doesn't cut it where I'm from," Vitani snarled.
"W-where are you from?"
"The outlands, duh!" She shouted. "Now tell me your name and where you're coming from."
"My father says not to trust an outlander!"
"Stubborn, I see? We'll fix that..." Vitani said. "Now. Tell me your name and where your coming from. Or else."
"I-I'm Kopa, from the Pridelands," a frightened Kopa had choked out.
---
"Vitani?!" He shouted.
"I said, where do you come from, and what's your-wait, how do you know my name?" she backed away, eyeing him with caution.
"Vitani?!" He repeated, astoished. "'Tani, is it really you?"
"Don't call me that! No one calls me 'Tani! Only one particular lion...but he's gone...forever..." her voice trailed off, and she looked down at her paws...then gasped.
The male lion's paws were familiar. His claws were unsheathed. There was a tiny brown birthmark shaped like a paw on the second toe on the right foot.
Slowly, she looked up, and her eyes met his. How had she been so blind?
His eyes were light blue, like his mother's, and his fur was a pollen-yellow. He had a fine mane. Brown, not red, but brown like his mother's tail tuft. And more importantly, he had a more-rounded face, like his father's, than most lions his age.
"KOPA!" She gasped. He nodded once, smiling slightly. "In the flesh."
"Kopa, it's really you! Oh, Kopa! I can't believe..." her voice trailed off, and she looked down. "What? What is it?"
"It's just...we saw your body. You were...you were dead. How are you-?"
Kopa smirked. "I asked myself that question, too. Over and over again. I really don't know. I woke up with all these scars, and...Zira!" He roared in anger, his claws digging into the dirt. "She did this to me! No." Then he looked up at Vitani's face. "You did this to me!"
"What?"
"You led me to the gorge that day! And then Zira showed up...you lie. That's all you do!"
"No, Kopa, you don't understand-"
"Yes, I do. I don't need your help."
"Just listen to me, please! Kopa, she used me to lure you! I had nothing to do with it, Kopa! I would never-"
"Well you did, so move downwind, out of my view!"
"Kopa, I'm sorry! I didn't...I..."
Kopa turned and scowled at her, then she began sobbing.
"You're right. I am a monster!" She ran off.
Kopa felt a pang of guilt for a moment, then shook it off. Partially. "Whatever. I don't need her." He looked down into the puddle again. He didn't see his own face, but Simba's.
"Dad?" He asked, looking closer. Simba turned away and shook his head before fading away.
"Vitani-wait!" He called out as loud as he dared roar. She heard him-barely.
Kopa ran towards her at full speed, towards a cliff overlooking the sunset.
"You were right...it wasn't your fault. I'm sorry, Vitani..."
"It's okay. I...I understand why you'd feel like that...Kopa! Wait here. Promise me you'll wait here!"
He nodded slowly, and Vitan iraced back towards Nala and Kiara.
"Kiara! Nala! I...lion...rogue...back there...Kopa...alive...come on!" She led them towards Kopa.
"Who...?" Nala's voice trailed off and she squinted at him. "Kopa?"
Kopa studied the two. "Mother? Kiara?" They each nodded.
"Wait'll Simba figures out you've been here all along!" Nala exclaimed and began to lead the four towards Pride Rock.
Kopa hesitaited. "I didn't say I was leaving," he responded. "I'm a rogue. I've lived this way for a while now. On my own."
"But...but Kopa, isn't this what you always dreamed of?" Vitani asked.
"I don't know, 'Tani. I'll come. But I'm not promising I'll stay."
Simba and Kovu were on top of Pride Rock. "Kovu...someday, you will need to be king of these lands. I won't be here. Kiara will rule alongside you, of course, but you will be the head of the Pridelands. Everyone will honor and respect you. And if they don't...you need to be prepared to fight. So, Kovu...are you ready?" Simba asked.
"Simba, I don't want to fight you! I'll hurt you!" Kovu insisted. "Kovu, it's the only way to train. And it won't be real. Just in case anything ever happens, you-"
"SIRE!" Zazu called, flying in.
"What is it, Zazu?" Simba asked. "A rogue! In the Pridelands!"
Simba turned to Kovu and smirked. "Well, Kovu. Perfect practice."
He led the smaller, weaker lion towards the rogue...and stopped dead.
"Nala, Kiara, Vitani! Who is this?"
"Simba, this is...Kopa. Kovu, this is-"
"Kovu?!"
"Kopa?!"
The lions stepped forward and growled. "Father, why is he here?!"
"Kopa! It's great to see you! Oh, and, uh...Kiara became the heiress to the throne, and now Kovu is in our pride, so...he is the heir to the throne now."
Kopa roared again. "Father, he is unfit for our pride! He is one of them, not us!"
"Kopa, if you'd just listen-" Kiara began. "Kiara! Stand aside," Kovu ordered.
"What are you doing here, rogue? These are my lands!" Kovu roared.
"Your lands?! I'm the rightful heir to the throne, I'm Simba's son! These lands belong to me!"
"Not from where I'm standing. You left your pride!"
"No, Kovu. Your mother almost killed me! And then, she kidnapped me! She hid me away!"
"Oh, yeah? You could've returned-"
"No, Kovu! It isn't that simple! I felt unloved! You were always the chosen one in your family, the perfect cub. But in mine, it was Kiara. Kiara this, Kiara that! And so, when no one came looking for me, I figured no one cared. They had their precious princess!"
"Kopa, now, you know that isn't true!" Nala cried.
"SILENCE!" Kopa roared, stepping forward.
"These are my lands. And if Kovu isn't willing to stand down," he growled out, unsheathing his claws, "then he's going to have to fight."
"Bring it on, hyena-brain!" Kovu growled.
"As you wish, termite-fur!" Kopa replied.
"Daddy, do something!" Kiara cried out.
"Simba!" Nala exclaimed.
Simba looked from Kovu to his long lost son and roared out, "As of right now, these lands belong to me!"
"Oh, please, Simba, you're nearly ancient now. You're going to die any day now," Kovu snorted.
"Take that back, outsider!" Kopa roared, finally slashing at Kovu. Kovu tried countering, but Kopa was too quick. He left a long, jagged claw-mark on his flank.
"No!" Kiara cried. She then knew what she had to do.
Kovu slashed back at Kopa, but Kopa countered the attack. "Is that all you've got? Guess they don't train you outsiders enough. At least...not enough to kill a Pridelander!"
Kiara jumped in the middle of both of them right as Kopa moved to slash Kovu. He ended up hitting her, leaving a deep, bleeding wound from her side up her whole left front leg, then she collapsed.
Everyone grew silent and stared at Kiara. Kopa, breathing heavily, took a step back, his claws red, dripping with blood.
"Kiara!" Simba cried.
"Why did you do this?!" Kovu growled.
"I-I didn't mean to, I didn't...Kiara is my sister, I wouldn't-"
Kovu nuzzled Kiara. She was still out cold.
"She's unconsious, Simba. Take her to Kuponya and Rafiki. They'll know what to do."
Simba was speechless. He looked from Kopa to Kiara, then lifted her onto his and Kovu's backs.
"Sire, the law says that any challenging rogue who harms a lion other than the current king must be judged in a court session," Zazu said, "meaning Kopa would have to stay under survelience for the night, then be judged in the morning."
"My father's law shall prevail," Simba replied with hesitation. "Nala, Vitani, come."
Nala followed behind the lions slowly. Vitani lingered back.
Kopa was still crouched down low, hs muscles showing, teeth bared, and claws unsheathed. He was breathing heavily. His blue eyes shone with the same feeling as Scar's-an immeadiate need to kill.
Vitani stared at him. She hadn't followed Nala. She wanted to stay with Kopa, but at the same moment, she was ready to leave him, afraid.
"What's happened to you?" She asked. "You're not the Kopa I remember."
Kopa looked up at her, eyes still narrowed. "You're right. I'm not."
"You aren't Kopa...you're another lion. I don't even know you anymore!" She shouted, backing up.
"Go on! Leave! Leave like the rest of them! No one's stopping you."
Vitani backed away and turned to run back into the Pridelands. Kopa lingered outside for a while, then finally approached Pride Rock.
He layed outside of the cave, alone, his head on a rock. It was cold, lonely, and gray. He was used to it, though.
Vitani was inside the cave, unable to sleep. She had her paw in a puddle and kept twirling it, staring down. Rafiki and Kuponya, the shamans, declared that Kiara would survive and gave her a few healing herbs to apply to her wound. She knew Kopa hadn't meant it. Or...had he?
Kopa stared up at the stars above.
Look at the stars. The Great Kings of the Past are looking down on us. Kopa, remember that they will always be there to guide you...as will I.
He tried to shake his father's echoing voice away.
No. You're not here, not when I need you most. You abandoned me, father. You abandoned me ever since Kiara was born.
He looked up and frowned.
"And you!" He kicked a stone at the sky. It fell back to the ground. "You were never with me. You aren't even real! Stupid Great Kings of the Past..."
There was a sudden swirlig of winds and several lions appeared in the sky.
"Kopa. You have forgotten us," they bellowed.
"No! You have forgotten me!"
"Wrong. We would never forget you. You're our grandson."
"Sarabi? Mufasa?"
"And us, too," the sky bellowed, "Mohatu, Ahadi, and Uru."
Kopa didn't respond. He was too awestruck.
"Kopa," they continued, "we understand why you're upset. I understand the most, I believe," Mohatu said. "You are the rightful king, but Kovu has accepted he throne. There is no going back. The outsiders have united with the pride. You'll be lucky if Simba allows yo to stay."
Simba paced back and forth in the cave. He couldn't choose between his son and his daughter. His firstborn son. His beloved, beautiful, fragile, perfect daughter...Kopa was wrong. He had changed. No matter how adorable, how sweet the lion had been as a cub, that had faded away now. He had no choice but to exhile Kopa.
Kopa slept outside in the cold. The sun rose, and he was the first to awaken...so he thought.
Vitani was sitting on a ledge, looking down.
"...Hey, 'Tani."
The lioness whirled around. "Oh. Kopa."
"Look, I didn't mean to...last night...your brother..."
"Kopa. It's fine."
"No, it isn't! I've done something terrible today."
"Kopa. I understand why you're mad. But it's nothing-"
"It is somthing! And today, I will avenge my actions. I will beat Kovu to the death of one of us."
"Kopa-"
"Ah, must this all end in violence? I'd hate to be responsible for the death of a loved one's loved one...wouldn't you agree, dearest Kopa?"
"Kovu! Vitani, in the cave."
"No."
"Kopa, you have drawn the line! Simba and I planned last night. We're going to-"
"Kovu! I told you to wait. He needs judgement. By both you and I."
"Oh, you shut up! You honestly think your little son is innocent? Kopa was always mean to me!"
"Me? Mean to you? Oh, Kovu, you're wrong. No. Remember when you drowned me, or at least, tried to?"
"After you led me to the gorge to get lost!"
"After you slashed me in the side!"
"After you promised me there was a fish in the water and pushed me in!"
"After your mom came after me and tried to kill me. Twice! And then she did it again!"
"Kopa, Kovu! STOP!" The roar came from Kiara, who limped out of the den. "Kiara! Rakiki said to rest for-"
"I know. I can't stand to see them kill each other, Daddy," she replied.
"Kiara, I'm sorry...I-I feel like somehow...like this is my fault...because I'm close to both of them..."
"Vitani. It's fine. I'm in the same position here. Think about it. Kovu to me is Kopa to you. And Kovu to you is Kopa to me."
"Just stand downwind of me, elephant-dung!" Shouted Kovu.
"Whatever, Outsider," Kopa growled. "You don't belong here. And you never will."
Kovu roared in anger. "Well, at least I don't abandon my homelands!"
"I did nothing! It was your mother that-"
"Kovu, Kopa, this has to stop!" Nala raored.
The Tale of Two Brothers (How Taka Became Scar)
Ahadi and Uru had been living together at Pride Rock for nearly a year, and what's more is they had had a cub. His golden fur was of Ahadi, and his red tail tip was of Uru. The cub's eyes were red-brown like Uru's. "His name is Mufasa." Uru declared as Rafiki took Mufasa gingerly in his hands. Silently and slowly, he approached the edge of the rock. When he lifted the cub, the animals cheered.
Uru and Ahadi loved their cub, and took care of him daily. Their worlds circled around Mufasa. That is why they were thrilled upon having their second-born cub. He was brown, like Uru's, with a black tail like Ahadi's. His eyes were green and very much like Ahadi's. "Taka," Ahadi said smiling at his second son. Taka was loved just as much and recieved a ceremony, too.
Time passed, and soon the cubs had grown. They loved to play. "Just be careful," Uru warned. The two brothers nodded. They were best friends, afterall. "Hey Taka!" Mufasa called out. "Yeah, Muffy?" Asked Taka. He called Mufasa Muffy. "C'mon, let's see if Sarabi and Sarafina want to play!" They raced down the path.
"Sarabi! Sarafina!" Mufasa called out. "Huh...oh, hiya, Muffy!" Sarabi greeted, standing. She had been in the middle of a mid-morning nap. Sarafina smiled. "Hey, Taka!" She greeted. All four of them were good friends, and they would play together each day. "Hey Sarabi, guess what?" Muffy asked. "What?" Sarabi replied. "One day, I'm going to be king! Taka will also be king!" Sarabi's face twisted. "Huh? Don't you know you can only have one king?" Taka smiled. "Nuh-uh! Tell her, Muffy!" Mufasa sighed. Taka loved this story.
"My grandfather, Mohatu, ruled in the mountains. There was another king there, but he allowed them. It was kind of like two prides sharing land, and sometimes coming together." Taka was amazed. "He was really brave," he remarked. Mufasa realized that Taka was the only one interested. Where were Sarafina and Sarabi?
"Aagh!" Taka exclaimed as Sarafina pounced on him. "Ha, pinned ya!" She laughed. Taka pushed her off. "Hey! Lemme up!" Then he lunged for her once more, but as always, she was on top again. "Pinned ya again!" She exclaimed, then moved. "Hey, Taka," Sarabi said, "I think Sarafina likes you!" Sarafina blushed. "No, I don't!" She said. "Oh yeah? Prove it!" Mufasa dared. "Alright! I will go a day without pinning Taka starting now." Sarabi, Taka, and Muffy gave each other glances. "Three," Muffy whispered, "Two," Taka whispered, "One!" Sarabi shouted as the three piled on top of Sarafina. "Ha, pinned ya!" They shouted. Then all four burst out into laughs.
"Hey, look!" Mufasa said. "What?" Asked the others. "Over there! See that shadowy place?" They looked around. "Yeah! I wonder what's out there..." Mufasa smiled. "There's only one way to know. C'mon, let's go check it out!"
They reached the area to find a bunch of giant bones and skulls. "W-what was that?" Sarafina asked. "What?" Sarabi asked. "Oh...never mind. I thought I heard laughing." Taka poked out an ear. "Wait! I hear it too! It's coming from the inside of that skull!" He pointed his nose. "Gee, Taka, I dunno if it's such a good idea to go in there-" Muffy warned. "Nah, come on, Muffy! It's safe!" Mufasa looked around and gulped. "Here goes nothing," he said, entering.
Inside, there wer a bunch of geysers that shot green gases. "Ew. What is this stuff?" Sarabi asked curiously. "I don't know." Taka and Muffy replied. They heard laughing again. "Shut up, Ed!" A voice said. The laughing came again. "ED!" Two voices shouted."Oh, my, look, it's time we should really go!" Muffy said. "Alright," Taka sighed.
At home, Taka couldn't stop thinking about what the laugh had meant. He knew Muffy wouldn't let him go off on his own, and neither would his parents. "Taka!" Ahadi called. "Yeah, dad?" He asked. "Muffy tells me you heard strange laughing earlier." Taka was confused. "Uh-huh." Ahadi nodded. "I'm just warning you, that if you hear that sound again, it's hyeas." Taka gulped. "H-hyenas?" Ahadi smiled. "Yes, Taka, hyenas. They are evil and have very bad ways. Promise me you will never talk to them." Taka nodded. "I promise."
But curiosity struck him the next morning. Early, he ran off to the place. "Hyenas! Hyenas! Hyenas!" He called out. He bumped into something. "Oops. Sorry." He apoligized. "Hey, who are you?" The figure asked. "Taka." He replied. "Well, nice to meet you. I'm Shenzi." The mist cleared and Taka realized she was a hyena. But she seemed nice, and she was his age. Maybe he could make a new friend. "So,Taka, would you like to meet my family? Mom's out hunting, but you'd better hurry. She doesn't like lions." Shenzi said. Taka nodded.
"This is Banzai, my brother. He has a sort of aggressive personality towards strangers." Shenzi walked towards the hyena. "Hi, Banzai!" She greeted. "Who's this?" Asked Banzai. "My name is Taka...I want to be friends!" Banzai looked him over. "A lion! Mom don't like lions 'round here!" Shenzi quickly led the cub to the third. "And this is Ed...I suppose you could say he's the dimmest bulb in the box. He doesn't talk." Taka stared at the hyena. He had tears in his ears and his tongue was hanging out. "BLAAHAHAAAHAAAAAAAAA!" Ed laughed."So, where-" Taka was interrupted by Shenzi. "Shh! Here comes Mom! Get outta here! Shoo! Come back tomorrow!" She said. Taka hurried back home.
"Taka, where have you been?" Ahadi asked. "Just exploring." Taka replied with a smile. "Alright," he said, then turned to Mufasa again. "...And so, that is how we came to live here in the Pridelands." the lion finished the story. "Oh, Taka, you've missed story time! I suppose I could tell another..." Taka grinned. "Please?" He pleaded. He loved his Ahadi's stories.
"Look at the stars. All the great kings of the past live up there, and they look down on us. Keep in mind that no matter what, they will always be there to guide you, and so will I." Mufasa smiled up at his father. "Wow! Really?" Ahadi chuckled. "Yes, Mufasa." Taka began playing with Ahadi's swishing tail. "Taka, are you listening?" The cub ignored him. "Taka, c'mon!" Then Mufasa turned to his father, "can we hear another story?" Ahadi smiled but shook his head. "No. It's getting late. But I'll tell you what-" he pulled Taka closer to him-"meet me at dawn when the sun has barely begun rising. I have a marvelous surprise for you." Mufasa nodded, but asked, "Whoa. What is it?" "If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise, now would it?" Ahadi replied. "If you tell me, I'll still act surprised!" Ahadi laughed.
Taka: The Tale of the Neglected Prince
The King and the Prince trudged through the twilight slowly. Taka's tail dragged on th ground and his head hung low as the king spoke. "Taka, I am very disappointed in you. What were you thinking?" When Taka didn't answer, Ahadi grumbled under his breath, "Why couldn't you be more like Mufasa?" Tears welled in the young cub's eyes. "I-I was just-"
"Silence!" Roared the furious king. "Come on. Let's go home."
Ahadi entered the cave, but a heart broken Taka lingered outside. He stared up at the stars. Remember this: the Great Kings of the past will always guide you, as will I. His father's once-soothing voice echoed in his mind.
"If you'll always be there to guide me," he whispered, "then how come you're never around?"
He made his way to a small crevice between two boulders away from Pride Rock. In fact, it was away from the Pridelands.
He laid in his small shelter until dawn, when a voice woke him up.
"Is it dead?" Someone asked. "Shh! It's waking up!" Someone else replied.
A pair of green eyes blinked up at the trio.
"It's the prince!" One of them exclaimed. "Good morning, young prince!"
"Wha-?" Taka peered around. He was in what appeared to be an underground cave. Several geysers bubbled around him. One shot out a strange green gas.
"Where am I?" He asked. "I didn't come here last night!"
"Welcome to the Elephant Graveyard. We saved you from a rogue last night," the female said.
"But...me? Why?" A confused Taka asked.
"Because friends look out for each other."
"Friends?" A small smile spread across the cubs face as he stood, shaking his pelt.
"I'm Shenzi. And this is Banzai, Ed," she said, pointing to the others. "Ed, um...he was bitten in the skull as a baby by your father. He can't speak," Banzai whispered.
Taka shook the image away as quick as it came. He did not want to see his father ripping apart the hyena, knowing that he could just as easily do the same to him.
"I'm Taka."
"If you're the prince, what are you doing out here all alone? Are you lost?"
Taka shook his head. "I'm not the prince. Not anymore, anyways." He flopped over on his side. "Well, you can stay with us!"
In Nuka's Eyes
Chapter 1: Daddy's Death
"Dad!"Nuka shouted helplessly, coughing through the smoke. He heard pawsteps behind him and turned, hopeful. "Dad?" But it was only his mother. "Come, Nuka...we'll find your daddy..." she said, fighting back tears. "Where is he?" Nuka asked her. "And who was that big yellow lion? Is he Daddy's friend? And what were they doing?" Zira sighed. She didn't want to tell her cub the truth. Not yet, when he couldn't understand. Lying to her beloved son felt wrong, but it was for his own good...right?
"Yes, Nuka...they're just playing a game grown-up lions like to play. It helps us strengthen our muscles and trains kings to be strong." Nuka nodded. "Oh..." he turned to see Vitani and smirked. "Hey, Lil' 'Tani...wanna fight? Rarrr..." he began leaping back and forth. Vitani gave him a questionable look. "What are you doing?" Nuka grinned. "Mother says strong lions fight all the time!" Vitani nodded and slouched down, her teeth bared. "Come, cubs!" Zira called. "We have to walk onwards." The two obeyed their mother, not knowing what was ahead.
Zira carried young Kovu in her jaws carefully. Scar had wanted him alive, but what for? An heir? But what about Nuka? He didn't want her to just forget Nuka...did he? She also carried her and scar's third born cub, Mabaya, on her back. Mabaya was a tiny lioness who resembled Kovu very much (because they were siblings). Her mind raced with a million questions, but one stabbed through her, turning her blood into ice. Is Scar alive?
Not too long ago, a dying rogue lioness had come into the Pridelands and had asked if there was anyone looking for any cubs. She claimed her time was running out, and she wante her cubs to have loving parents. Zira and Scar had hand-chosen Mabaya and Kovu (then named Paka and Ukweli) as their heirs. One of them would rule, perhaps both of them. They were given most of the parents' love.
Just a little ways ahead was a mangled and bloodied corpse of a brown-pelted lion with a black mane. He had one scar over his left eye, and multiple fresh scars all along his pelt. Zira ducked her head, approaching him slowly, and placing young Kovu and Mabaya down beside him. Nuka and Vitani followed her, now aware of what had happened...or at least, Nuka was.
"...Dad?" He smiled hopefully again. Tears began streaming down the young cub's face. "Come on, dad...we gotta get up...we gotta go home..." he nudged his father's corpse. "HELP!" He shouted as loud as he could, but his voice echoed. "Somebody!" More echoes. "Anybody." All that accompanied im was an empty echo. "Help..." he whispered at last, feeling the hot sting of tears spilling from his eyes that were waterfalls.
Vitani approached Nuka. "Nuka, what's wrong? Daddy's just taking a nap. It's nothing to cry about. You and I take naps all the ti-" Nuka whirled around and growled, "He's not napping, Vitani! He's DEAD! He's DEAD, okay?! DEAD, DEAD, DEAD! And there's NOTHING we can do about it!" Vitani looked down, tears now spilling from his eyes. "No..." she whispered, crying. "No."
Zira cried, too. She pulled all three of her cubs close to her, especially Nuka. "That yellow lion was Simba, and they weren't playing. They were fighting over the throne...over the Pridelands. Simba is a monstrosity! He was supposed to be dead! None of this would've happened if it weren't for that lying, selfish, no-good, murderous, backstabbing, evil, son of a-" Nuka stared up at his mother with startled eyes. He'd never heard her this angry before. "Are you mad at me, Mommy?" He asked, fearing the answer.
Zira looked down at her cub. "No, Nuka...I'm mad at Simba. He has torn our family apart! And he will pay for it..." Zira swiped at a nearby tree branch, snapping it in half.
Nuka's eyes grew wide in fear as he flames grew bigger and bigger. "Mother...we should go now," he said, his voice shaky. "You're right, Nuka..." said Zira, tossing Vitani onto her back and carrying Kovu in her jaws again. "Hey! What about me?" Nuka asked. Zira smiled. "You're older than they are, son...you can walk." Nuka ndded. "Walk where, mother? Where are we going?" Zira grinned malesciously. "We're going to kill Simba."
They headed towards where the 'king' was positioned beside Nala. "Simba!" Zira called. Simba spun around, shocked. Zira had her cubs behind her in a protective stance. Rain had come in a downpour, extinguishing the flames around Pride Rock. Zira was filthy, and mud covered her from ears to tail. "Zira?" Simba asked. "What are you-" without further ado, Zira lunged at Simba's neck. "Aaaaaaagh!" Simba roared in pain and clawed at her, managing to get her off of him.
They stared at each other and a long silence followed. Dark red droplets fell from Simba's entire body; a mixture of dirt, rain, and blood. Simba tensed his muscles and took an aggresive stance. He swiped at Zira's ear and left a notch in it. Blood driped from the 'queen's' wound as she growled, "This is for you, SCAR!" And leaped at Simba once again. She slashed away at his stomach. There was no chance of escape for Simba now.
Nala debated what to do. Zira was always there for her during the harsh times...or at least, as a cub. Kind of. After Simba's 'death', Nala had hung out with Zira to hopefully fill the gap in her heart. But everytime Zira had something to show Nala, it ended up gettting them hurt or in trouble. (And not the kind of trouble you get into for just going around to the Elephant Graveyard.) Zira had also helped Nala hunt one time, but then again, she had stolen most of Nala's meals from her. When Scar wanted Nala as his mate, Zira had plotted killing Nala because she had always had a thing for Scar.Nala had told Zira she didn't love him, but she didn't believe it until she heard the very words from Scar.
"I need a queen, and my first choice refuses! Sweet, beloved Nala...do you reconsider?" He had asked. "NO!" The angry Nala growled. "Then do I have any...hmm, per say...volunteers around here? I need an heir, and I'm not going to breed one by myself!" Scar had roared out. Zira, despite the surprised and disturbed glances she was given, had approached Scar and whispered, "This is what I've alwayys dreamed of." And from that day forth, Scar had also learned that deep down inside, he loved Zira more than he could ever love Nala.
Nala shook the memories away and decided that Simba, her mate, was far more important than a long ago friend who'd betrayed her, and lunged at Zira. "GET AWAY FROM HIM!" She roared, her 'inner wild side' coming out. "Oh, little princess, I'm too much danger for you!" Cackled Zira, backing away and staring at Nala. Nala glanced at Simba, who mouthed, "I'm okay! Get her!" Nala smirked. "Danger? Ha! I walk on the wild side. I laugh in the face of danger, HA, HA, HA, HA!" And she threw herself not at Zira, but at her cubs. Zira gasped, and just as Nala's jaws closed on Mabaya. "No! NOOO!" Zira howled in anger. "I'll leave! WE'LL LEAVE!" Nala had put the scrawny newborn down. "Good. Now you and your young cubs, get out," Simba had put in. Mabaya was covered in a coppery red...blood.
Zira gasped, flipping her adopted cub over in her paw. "She's...dead," she gasped. We'll leave, she thought, but we'll be back. Kovu will fight for these lands when he's of age...and he will kill you, Simba! You, too, Nala, for killing my sweet Mabaya!
With that, she left, carrying Kovu and Vitani, leaving Mabaya's corse in the hands of Nala, not knowing that her 'daughter' was still alive...
Shadowland...the Leaves Have Fallen...
Sarabi, weak and tired, lay there helplessly on her side. "Mufasa...Simba..." she murmured over and over again. She couldn't believe they were dead. But how had Scar survived?
She heard pawsteps from behind her and ignored them, expecting them to be from Scar or hyenas. "Either go away or devour me now. I'm not in the mood," she said in a sobbing whisper. She expected to get a growl in response.
"S-Sarabi...I-" Sarabi turned around. "Oh, Nala, I...I thought you were someone else. What's the matter?" She noticed that Nala was heavily crying. Nala looked down. "Well...I...I miss them..." she sobbed. Sarabi looked down, feeling sorry for the cub. "Shhh...where is your mother?"
Sarafina appeared from behind and nodded. "Nala...wanted to talk to you. I figured you two were the closest to them." Sarabi nodded. "Are you sleeping outside, Sarabi?" Nala asked. Sarabi nodded. "But...why?" Nala asked. "I don't want to sleep in the cave. Not with Scar there." Nala looked down. "So you're going to spend the rest of your life outside? But what about when it rains?" Sarabi replied, "I'll sleep under a tree or something." Sarafina sighed. "Nala," Sarafina whispered. Nala looked up. "Yes, mother?" Sarabi stayed rolled over. "Come on. You'll see Sarabi i the morning." Nala sighed. "In a second, okay? I'll meet you there."
When her mother left, she turned to Sarabi. "Tell me a story, Sarabi." Sarabi was great with the cubs, and every night, she'd tell them a different story. "Okay," Sarabi replied. "Is it one about you and Mufasa when you were little?" She asked. "No. This story is more serious." Nala climbed on top of her back.
"Look at the stars. The Great Kings and Queens of the past are looking down on us. Remember that they will always be able to guide you, and they will protect you." Nala looked up, amazed. Her smile soon faltered. "...But if the Great Kings and Queens of the Past take care of us...then why did they let Simba and Mufasa die?" To this, Sarabi had no response. "I don't know, Nala."
In the morning, the sun rose to another sorrow-filled day. Sarabi was making a trip to the gorge this morning. "Nala," she called out, "Would you like to join me?"
Nala nodded, teary-eyed, and followed her into the gorge.
There was a snapped tree in the center, and under it, Mufasa's body. Sarabi immeadiatly felt grief, overloading grief, and she began crying uncontrollably. Nala had never seen a lioness like this before. Sarafina approached them from behind. "Come on, Nala. I'll take you home. I think we should give Sarabi some time alone." Nala followed her mother respectufully, but looked back. Scar was right. There was Mufasa's body, but Simba's was no where in sight.
"Mufasa..." Sarabi murmured. "Watch over our poor Simba..." she looked up at the sky, then down at his body. She rested her head on top of his body.
She returned to the Pridelands to see a hyena. She was Scar's right-hand. Sarabi turned to her, her face grieving. Shenzi felt a bit guilty for a moment. She had helped to kill Mufasa. Didn't Sarabi deserve to know her son was alive? No. Scar would kill her, and she would set out to find him.
"I hope you're happy," Sarabi growled. Shenzi just looked down. "I'm so sorry, Sarabi," she whispered. "Sorry about what? Destroying my home? Destroying the food? Taking all the water?" She slashed at Shenzi's right flan, leaving a long, jagged scar. "I deserved that." Sarabi whirled around. "What?"
"Nothing. Just...go about your way. Scar won't hear about this, okay? It was a hunting injury, as far as he'll know. Just run along."
Sarabi went about her way slowly. When she reached the Pridelands, Scar called her. "SARABI!"
She made her way into the den. "Yes, Scar?" She expected to be slashed at, but Scar smirked. "As you may know, I need an heir. And you, my beloved, are still the queen. Just with a new king." Sarabi backed up. "Ah, now, don't fear me. You always were such a cunning, beautiful lioness...now do as I say, and no one gets hurt." Sarabi flinched, but how coul;d she leave now? Two hyenas guarded the door, looking less friendly than the one she'd seen earlier.
She made her way towards the back of the cave reluctantly with Scar. "I hope you're enjoying this," she growled out.
Later on, the lioness emerged from the den, sobbing. "Sarafina, rally the lionesses." Sarafina nodded and soon, they were all gathered. When Sarabi told them what happened, everyone was furious. "How could he do that?!" Sarafina roared. "We should overthrow him! We should-" Sarabi covered her mouth. "Shh! He'll hear you!" She returned her attention to the circle. "I have a plan. If the cub is a boy, then I will hand-raise him." Sarafina looked down. "But...Scar said he'd raise any cubs that were born." Sarabi felt her heart drop. "How do you know this? He never told me that!" Sarafina looked down at her feet. "Because last night...he did the same thing to me."
Everyone gasped, astonished and outraged. "That is it! I have had it!" Someone roared. "We'll make a plan. Surely one of you will birth a male." Sarabi nodded. "When the cubs are born, we can have one lioness leave and watch over them far away. That way Scar doesn't get to raise them. We'll have our own small pride." Sarafina nodded in agreement. "
That night, Sarabi was standing on top of Pride Rock when the winds began to blow and the clouds formed a new starry-shape. "Mufasa?" She asked. "Sarabi," a deep voice called out. "I'm sorry about Scar, Mufasa, I...I had to..." Mufasa nuzzled her. "I know. It's okay. Everything is going to be okay." Sarabi looked up from nuzzling him. "How do you know that? Where's Simba? Is he with you?" Mufasa faded away, and the night became as depressing as it had been.
Sarafina approached her from behind, unaware of what had just happened. "Sarabi?" She asked, "I think there's something horribly wrong."
Sarabi whirled around, concerned. "What? Is it Nala?" Sarafina shook her head. "It's...me, I think..." Sarabi gave her a questioning glance. Sarafina looked down. "I...I hate my cub," she admitted in a whisper. "I don't know her, but...I hate her. Or him. It. It deserves to die."
"Sarafina, don't say that! We all know-"
"That this thing inside me, this monstrosity, is Scar's cub? And inside of you, too, and who knows who else!"
"Sarafina...you're right, but don't take it out on your cub."
Sarafina stared dwon, knowing Sarabi was right. "I know..."
Nala was cowering in the corner. Neither lioness had noticed her.
"But it's just wrong!"
"Sarafina, everything Scar does is wrong. You ought to know that by now."
Months passed. Each lioness gave birth to their cub, only two days apart.
Sarabi had given birth to a girl, a healthy lioness whom had the colors of Scar and the eyes of Scar, as well, yet her physical shape was Sarabi-like.
"What will you call her?" Sarafina asked. "Her name is Binti," Sarabi replied. Nala smiled down at her, then turned to her sibling.
Sarabi had been lucky enough to birth a female. Sarafina had given birth to a male.
"What've you named yours?" Sarabi asked.
"Her name is Mheetu," Sarafina replied. Maybe she coud get by by telling the world her cub was a girl...but lionesses didn't grow manes."
"I mean...his name is Mheetu. He's a...boy."
Scar approached the two. "I've heard you've each birthed my cubs. Show them to me."
"This is Binti," Sarabi said, motioning towards her beautiful, sweet, sweet daughter.
"And this is...Mheetu," Sarafina said quietly.
"Mheetu? Ah, yes...a beautiful, beautiful pair of daughters...yet I need an heir to the throne, a male."
"Um...M-Mheetu is a...male," Sarafina said quietly.
An evil, evil grin spread across Scar's face. "Oh. Sarafina, as you know, I must teach my son properly the ways of ruling a kingdom. Wait until he is 5 months old and off of milk. Then you will bring him to me."
