So, I have a problem. I went to the pet store today to buy some food for my snake (frozen!). Looked at the small animals. Saw a trio of four week old baby rats going for snake food. I fell in love with a TINY black berkshire, who has high white markings and an incredibly sweet face. WANT.

I have the same issue. I saw, at my breeder's little store, some feeder rats and mice. Out all of all the albinos, there was this little bitty champagne. What on earth was that gorgeous little one doing in there? D,: I wanted her so bad.

my rat Harriette, and my mouse baby who passed away in September were both meant to be snake food. the rats and mice you by at petsmart and such are usually much more jumpy and aggressive than the snake feeder mice in my opinion.

Don't even get me started on Petsmart. They broke my heart with my first rat, Sherlock. I loved him like a baby and, when we took him to the vet, he was dying. Doc said he had maybe a week. So, we took him back. It was probabbly the hardest thing, because they re-sold him to another little girl who loved him and he died with her. Petsmart is terrible for buying pets.

Well, I went to get the rat. It wasn't a boy- it is a little girl. She is much too young for a litter and had only girls in her cage with her, so I think we're safe. I'll be getting her spayed as soon as she's large enough, and then she can move in with the others.

And yes, she is a high white rat, which puts her in danger of dying from Megacolon. If she does get it, I will put her to sleep humanely at the first sign of the disease.

I'd also like to point out to those who want to breed pet shop rats- she's pretty, yes, and aside from a URI, healthy, but I still won't breed her, even though I have males who would gladly oblige.

Most of my rats and mice have origins in a feeder tank someplace or another. Some were rescued from neglectful homes, but originated from feeder tanks, or are the sons of pet shop rats that were abandoned. All of my rats and mice are very, very sweet. Some of the mice are a bit fussy and weird about new people or being picked up, but they all enjoy being held and petted. My rats zoom to the door when I come in the room. It's about nurture, and love, when it comes to animals who have had a rough start in life. Give them love and affection and care, and they will love you back. There is nothing more anyone could ask for.

i don't like petsmart or petco they don't have girls:( boys gross me out *retches*

I have three boys and they are far from disgusting. It's better they sell boys than girl, because there won't be accidental litters that way, also.

and yah feeder kittens are less aggressive because that way there less likely to hurt the snake...wait thats not true becuase they are killed nvm. they might be depressed since they were destined to die

Why do people hate rats? I personally think they're cute.

Alot of people hate rats becousehey believe they are :"nasty, dirty, disease filled, etc"
which rat lovers know better.
My mom is afraid of their tails.
