Thonk. Thonk. Thonk. The sound of Nagate's hoof beating against the barn door, Simmarrah's early morning wake up call. She opened a purple eye and yawned, looking warily at the clock.
5:30am. Half an hour early. She slipped out of bed and used the toilet, changing into the jeans and blue t-shirt she had laid out last night.
Thonk. Thonk. Thonk.Muffled this time, it was still loud enough to startle her.
How does Zack sleep through this racket? She brushed then tied her hair up in a pony tail, studying herself in the mirror as she did so. Sam wrinkled her nose at the figure in the mirror. While her long black hair and unusual purple eyes were stunning, Sam had no claim to beauty. She felt her small body, strong as it was, didn't suit her, and wished she was tall and curvaceous like her mother was. Men tended to find her "cute" and "adorable", and oh god how she hated those words when they were directed to her, unless uttered by her mother. Her heart clenched and she tried not to cry as she thought of her mother.
Mom. Dad .I miss you so much. I hope you are proud of me, and all the choices I have made.Thonk. Thonk. Thonk.Snapped out of her musings, she moved to the kitchen, started a pot of coffee and let Sasha out to pee. The german shepherd was Zachary's dog, a Christmas present from their parents the previous year, and was less than a year old. She was well trained, by Zack's hand, and even though he loved the dog she only served as a reminder of their parents. She had been the last gift given to him from them, a week late surprise since they had to wait for her to be old enough to bring home. He had cried when he saw the black puppy sitting in his bed, great racking sobs that had terrified mom until she realized that he was saying
"thank you, thank you, thank you!" and crying with joy. From the moment he got home from school until he left again in the morning, Zach was never far away from his beautiful Sasha. She was incredibly intelligent, and was potty trained in a few days, and had all the basic commands down in 5 weeks. They usually ran the woods and fields surrounding the farm, and Sasha had stayed glued to his side.
That was, until February 23, the most hated day in the Tanikaze house hold, the day they had lost the heads of the house, and the day that Sam and Zacks worlds fell apart. 'A freak accident' they called it, 'one in a million'. Sam had gotten the phone call at school. They had been driving home from a night out with Zack when a tree fell at the perfect moment to crush the car. Miraculously, Zack had escaped with only a few minor bruises, though the doctors warned Simmarrah that he would be in a state of shock for quite a while and might need intensive therapy. They also told her what she already knew; they had no living relatives for Zack to go to. She had two options, place Zack up for adoption, or quit school and return home to raise him herself. There really wasn't much of a choice to her. She loved her brother and didn't want to lose another piece of her family, and she could always finish school later. So she quit her classes, packed her bags, said goodbye to her friends, and flew home to Colorado. There she was greeted by a silent sullen boy, who would rather stay in his room than anything else. He shut her out, not willing to talk to her or anything, and he shut Sasha out, practically banning the pup from his presence.
beep-beep. beep-beepThonk. Thonk. Thonk. The coffee was finished, and Nagate was still voicing complaints. She could imagine him, dark brown head peeking over the fence to try and see her and then pounding on the barn door next to him when she didn't immediately appear. Rowena would be standing next to him, bored as ever, and the horses a little farther off, waiting patiently. Sam filled her thermos, stirring in a packet of hot chocolate and some milk. It was her favorite blend, the sweetness of the chocolate covering the bitterness of the coffee, and giving her the energy to go through the morning chores.
Thonk. Thonk. Thonk.Louder and more urgent this time. Sam started to laugh.
"I'm coming! I'm coming!" she called, and slipped through the front door of the barn to grab the feed. She dumped the scoops into individual buckets and was nearly ran over as she opened the back door into the pasture. A couple flicks of her hands and the critters backed up enough for her to start dumping grain into the feeding pans. Everyone but Cloud, Zack's pony, got a scoop. She only got half, and Nagate, the never ending black hole, got 2 scoops. She watched them eat a little, making sure they didn't try to steal each other's food, then went to get the hay. Sasha waited for her outside the fence. The dog had learned the first day that Nagate arrived that she needed a fence between herself and the wild stallion, and had a wary distrust of him. Sam glanced at her.
"Wuss," she called,
"he's too busy stuffing his gut to chase you." Sasha responded with a wagging tail but did not approach. Sam tossed down a bale from the loft, sighing as she realized how few were left.
She started to worry as she spread the hay out. How would she afford enough hay to feed everyone for the winter? Her parents had left behind a life insurance policy, and a lot of debt, and the policy had barely been enough to cover everything. Luckily the house had been paid off long ago by her grandfather, and there were only a few bills to pay, but even so, she didn't make very good money, and things were starting to get tight again.
I might have to sell someone. Her face blanched. It was an option she had taken before, selling off her some of parents horses to pay the bill when Zack broke his arm. She really didn't want to have to do that again, there was only a few stock left from her parents, and she didn't want to give up something so dear to them. She had kept Zacks pony last time, hoping that having her would pep him up a little bit, but he had hardly left the house.
Sam stepped back from the group. Two Narakari, two horses, one pony. She studied the horses, a chestnut pair, her parents favorites and the best of all they had. They were young and of good breeding, but they weren't really being ridden. She had wanted to use them as brood mares later this year, bring in some extra cash from the foals, and was loathe to part with them. She turned to study Rowena, her beautiful brindled gray Narakari.
No, I couldn't part with you. Sam's father had taken her on the traditional Nari hunt her 19th summer. They rode horses to the Hell's Gate Canyon and sat at the top, waiting, like Sam and Zack had earlier this year. Her father had explained the whole process to her, and the thought of trying to ride a wild Narakari without a saddle or bridle, just a rope, had scared her. Her father had enough courage for the both of them, and when he gave chase to the hell horses she followed without hesitation. Rowena had hung on to the dearest end, and tried her mightiest to throw Simmarrah when she slipped onto her back. But in the end, Sam had won their private battle of will and power and forged a wonderful connection with the mare. So persnickety was this hell horse that she wouldn't let anyone but Simmarrah get near her, let alone touch or ride her.
The same kind of bond existed between Sam and Nagate. She had defeated him that day in the Canyon, and he saw her with respect and eventually love. She had been so relieved when she discovered that Nagate really was a sweet and gentle soul, quite the opposite of her Rowena, and was only cranky about food.
A heavy head nudged her shoulder, and Nagate was suddenly slobbering spit and hay all over her chest as he greeted her and asked for his usual head rub. He itched fiercely around his horns, and she could hear him sighing with relief as she scratched away. Nagate didn't really belong to Sam, not yet anyways, so selling him wasn't an option. And she knew that when the time came, if he wasn't miraculously gifted to her , she would spend what little savings she had left to buy him. She couldn't abandon the stallion like that, not after all the time they spent together, the training and daily routine that they both enjoyed. And especially not after what he had done for Zack, to Zack. Sam smiled, hugging the stallion.
"Thank you for coming into my life." The Narakari had saved Zack, from himself. The 10 year old boy, once active and outgoing, was depressed and reclusive. He hardly ate or went outside. He was being made fun of at school, his grades were slipping, and Sam could see his happiness draining away. The first time he had shown any form of excitement was when Sam told him about the competition she had entered and that she needed to capture a wild Narakari. He was hardly able to go near Rowena, and Sam had to be present for even that. Zachary had always held an interest in the hell horses, ever since he had first seen one on TV in a parade. For 3 year old Zack that was a horse fit for a warrior, and he wanted to be a warrior so he could ride a Narakari. When Sam had triumphantly brought home Rowena, Zack had wanted to ride her, but had been warned away with several bites. He had lost interest in her quickly enough: she didn't want to make friends and would ignore or run away from him. When she saw his excitement at her news, Sam asked him if he would be willing to come along to the hunt, in case she got hurt. He eagerly said yes, and was awake before her the day of the catch.
Sam had just caught the stallion, riding out his bucks and crow hops with little difficulty, when Zack came galloping up on Cloud. He was out of breath and his face was flushed, but his eyes were wide as he took in the exhausted stallion. First words out of his mouth
"Can I ride him home?" made Sam laugh but regretfully say no.
"He has to be tamed and trained first." They were heading for home, and Simmarrah had switched to Rowena. Zack was silent for a moment, then peeped up with
"then I want to help!" Sam had been taken aback. This was the first time that Zack had wanted to do, well anything, since their parents had died.
"Of course you can help!" She smiled at him
It had taken a while before Zack came out of the house to watch her lunge Nagate, and boy what a day that was! Zack had been wearing a tye-dye rainbow t-shirt that drove Nagate absolutely nuts until Sam told Zack to come into the ring so the stallion would calm down. Zack was hesitant at first, he had only touched the wild stallion from behind a fence, and was unsure of how he would react. He stood near the fence, uncertain of what to do until the stallion had ripped the lunge line out of her hands and charged the boy. Sam shouted for him to get out of there, even though the stallion had never been outright vicious to her, he was still wild and unpredictable, and she didn't want her little brother getting hurt again. Zack stood there in shock as the stallion came to a sudden halt in front of him and began sniffing and nuzzling the shirt, Zack's hands, his face, and his hair and whickering. Sam was stunned. The stallion had never greeted her in such a way, though he would gently shove her with his head when she fed him in the morning. She walked up to the pair, Zack laughing as the stallion rubbed his head on his shirt.
"Zack, would you like to try lunging him?" I don't think he is going to pay any more attention to me. Zack was hesitant again, but he dutifully took the lunge line and walked with her to the middle of the ring. Together they moved Nagate through his paces, and when Sam called it quits he had more animation in his face and was actually smiling. He helped brush the Nari down, at ease as if he was grooming his pony. The next day, when Zack came home from school he ran right to the small round pen they were quarantining Nagate in and slipped between the rails to talk to the stallion about his day. Nagate greeted him with the same enthusiasm that he had showed the day before, and Sam was surprised to pull up to Zack running a brush over the stallion in the pen. At first she scolded him for going near the wild stallion without her, but it was only half heartedly, and she ended it with
"give me a few days to test him out and if he is a good boy you can be with him without me." She knew that Nagate desperately needed and wanted the companionship of the stallion. It drew him out of his funk, and while he was still somewhat distant towards Simmarrah and the rest of the world, he would tell all his worldly problems into the stallions mane, much as she had when she was a child.
After she deemed the stallion to be safe yet untrained, and that Zack could work with him on his own time
'as long as you don't try to ride him! That's my job!', she would often come home to her brother sitting back to back with the stallion while he did his homework. He began spending more time outside, not coming in until dusk, some days training the stallion, some days just relaxing. Every day after work Sam would work with Nagate on some of the more refined things that Zack couldn't yet teach.
After a short period of time, Nagate came to Sam and asked her to follow him outside. She followed him to the round pen housing the stallion and slipped between the rails behind him. Nagate greeted him rowdily as usual, giving the boy a hug with his head and neck. Zack pushed him off and pointed his finger to the ground.
"Nagate! Lie down!" Like a big dog the stallion lowered his body to the ground, front end first.
"Are you ready? Watch this!" One moment Zack was speaking to her, the next he was on the back of the Narakari, gripping his mane as the stallion lurched to his feet. Before Sam could get out a 'what the hell are you doing?!?' Nagate was trotting around her, his ears cocked back as listened to the young rider on his back.
"I taught him voice commands, see?....Walk Nagate!" The stallion instantly slowed to a walk.
"Trot Nagate!" He picked up the trot again.
"And whoah Nagate!" And like a perfect gentleman the Nari stopped quickly without unseating the boy. Sam didn't know what she wanted to do more; spank him for disobeying or hug him for how wonderfully awesome he was. She had only thrown a saddle up on his back, and had yet to get back on him. She was surprised how far they had come, and was ecstatic that Zack had come out of his shell.
They celebrated with ice cream that night out in the town. As they scooped their sundaes, Sam popped the question.
"Ok, spill! How? When? Are you crazy?" Zack laughed.
"Well I worked with him on the lunge line like you taught me until he was doing everything pretty much on command. Then I did it again without the line until he was perfect for me. " She nodded, it was the method their father had taught her.
"The laying down thing he kinda learned on his own, I would always reward him for it when I was around by sitting with him back to back. As for when I backed him? Or the first time I rode him?" At Sam's glare he continued.
"I first sat on him about a week ago, he had just gotten down for me and I stretched across his back like I normally do, and he kinda just stood up on me. All we did was stand there, me petting him, him eating tufts of grass. I got off before you came home, so it was only a few minutes. But for me, it felt like an eternity, because he gave me the gift of his trust and acceptance and love. I put a bridle on him two days later and rode him then, my heart in my throat the whole time, because I was bare back and I didn't want him to buck me off. He was perfect, and we just walked and trotted like we did today, and I barely had to use the reigns." He looked down shamefacedly, she arched an eyebrow.
"I'm sorry I didn't follow your decree and stay off him," he looked up at her earnestly
"but Nagate trusted me and I didn't want to let him down by wimping out. And besides, aren't you happy that I'm out of the house and doing something with myself instead of playing Skyrim?" she nodded at that.
"Apology accepted, but from now on you ride with a saddle and bridle and under my direction. Capeesh?" He gave her that ear splitting grin that she loved and missed so much.
"Yeah, of course!" They both dug into their sundaes, the tension alleviated.
The next day when Zack came home from school Nagate was waiting for him, bridled up and wearing Zack's stubben that he normally used on Cloud. Trapped in the cross ties the stallion couldn't bum rush the boy so he settled for a trumpeting neigh as soon as he spotted him. Sam popped out of the tack room, helmets in her hands.
"Ok big boy, we are going for a ride!" Zack paled; he had yet to take the stallion out of the round pen, and he worried that he might get taken away with. Sam patted his shoulder and handed him a helmet.
"It'll be ok, it's only a short one! Go on and hop on!" He unclipped Nagate from the ties and led him out to the mounting block. The stallion was calm as he slid into the saddle, barely using his stirrups and instead gripping with his legs. The stallion shifted as Sam came out with Rowena and flung his head up. Zack stiffened and Sam watched warily. Would the stallion take off? Zack tugged gently on the reign and spoke to Nagate and Sam could see the horse relax again. She hopped on Rowena and set them off towards the woods at a nice slow walk. The Nari only spooked once at a deer exploding from the brush but Zack handled him well and overall the ride was fantastic. Sam had even jumped Rowena over a creek, a feat the mare was none so thrilled about, and almost had to rescue Zack from drowning when Nagate felt it was necessary to roll in said creek.
Things got better for them. Zack had just gotten an A B report card, a major improvement from the straight F's of the last semester. The teacher was apparently surprised,
"I don't know how you did it but you finally reached him. He is on the verge of being held back a year, but if he stays like this he will pass. He is such a bright and intelligent student, it's wonderful to meet the real Zachary. Keep up the good work." was written on a post-it attached to his report card. That was all before the bullying started up again. They had removed the ringleader of the 'bully crew', as Sam liked to call them, to another class but it looked like they were picking it back up since they had parents participating in the competition as well. So they thought it would be fun to torture and pick at the boy until he broke down and played a dirty trick on a fellow competitor. Zack was grounded indefinitely for that prank, but Sam relented in two weeks when she realized that the stallion was missing Zack as much as Zack was missing him, and her brother gave her an easy way out.
His class had taken a field trip the day before to the regional hospital during one of those rare moments where clowns and dogs and cats would come to cheer up the sick and injured, and even a pony bigger than his Cloud. That was when Zack came up with quite a brilliant way to get himself ungrounded and back on Nagate. He asked the pony's handler for some information, and when he got back to school the next day, did a little research and printed out some paperwork. He approached her that afternoon and Sam quickly realized that something was up. Zack explained everything and showed her the paperwork detailing the requirements. She looked up at him questioningly.
"And who do you plan on training for this National Hospital Pony Walker gig?" She was impressed after reading through most of papers. They had even mentioned that they would be compensated for their time, and while the figure wasn't large, it would still be a help.
"I think Nagate would be the perfect fit." She thought about that. The stallion had a calm demeanor and disposition and seemed very loving and gentle around and towards people. Having service dogs around him would be an issue, but it was something they could work with. She saw the pleading look in his eyes, and relented.
"Ok, you are ungrounded thus far to help me train him for this 'Test'. But first I want to see how he is around strangers and a bunch of kids. Your birthday is coming up, right? Invite your 'friendly' classmates and we will have a party on Friday!" She knew he had found a way out of being grounded and he had a bonus of a party on top of that! Zack wasn't expecting her to throw him a party; their parents hadn't been in the habit of it so he had learned early on to not expect one. Simmarrah grabbed his arm before he darted out of the room.
"I want you to start helping me despook and desensitize him tomorrow." Zack was so excited he couldn't speak, just nodded and ran.
The next day she stopped by the dollar store to find some crazy stuff to use to despook her stallion. She had never done a desensitization by herself before, she had always been at a clinic, so it was kind of fun to see what she remembered. She found pool noodles, plenty of blue and silver tarps, a pack of balloons, some stuffed animals and toy balls, and an old fire department bell she had got at the thrift store next door. Zack helped her to set things up and to build some funny looking contraptions. At first Nagate was pretty unsure of what to do with all this crazy stuff in his pen, but then he realized that none of it was coming at him or hurting him so he ignored everything. Sam was pretty happy. It had just proved how bomb proof Nagate was and that she didn't have to do much with him.
They started with the plastic bags, rubbing them all over his body and whipping them out so that they made loud noises. He was scared at first but then Zack showed him that it was a monster and he chilled out. The stallion ignored the pool noodles, even when they were smacking him with them. He didn't like the tarps though, he didn't like how big they were or the way they sounded when he stepped on them or they brushed his body. It took Sam a moment to get him over that little hump, and everything else was a breeze for them. The stallion acted like he had been giving lessons his whole life, not fresh caught 3 months ago.
Sam wiped the slobber off her shirt as Zack approached.
"Good morning!" "Mornin." was the grumbled reply. She turned to her brother. He should have a word in things too.
"Zack, I'm thinking of selling off one of the animals so we can afford enough feed for the rest. If you had to decide, which would you chose?" Instantly
"Not Nagate! Don't you dare take away my Nagate!" Sam laughed.
"I wouldn't dream of it hun. It's between Cloud and mom and dads' pair." Zack's face darkened as he thought, playing the pros and cons in his head.
"Sam, can I ask something of you?" [color=purple]She nodded, already knowing the question before he said it. "If we decide to sell Cloud, would you give me Nagate to replace her? I'm starting to get too big for her.Sam nodded,
"yes of course. So selling Cloud is ok with you?" He shook his head.
"I don't like it and I don't want to but we really don't have a choice do we." She hugged him.
"You've grown up little bear."In the end, Nagate was Zack's horse, from the day they met till they died she knew they would have a deep connection and understanding of one another.
So I got fired last night and couldn't sleep so I wrote to ease the pain.
I have been thinking of this backstory for several weeks and I am glad I had the chance to write it.
Congrats to you if you read the whole thing. I'm surprised I wrote so much, but then again I am a better writer than I am artist as you shall see momentarily. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Zack's first backing of NagateSo I attempted to draw a complementary picture to the story, however a very crappy paint program (let's just say it likes to resize your picture for 30 minutes and adds lines where you didn't place them and oh yeah you can't erase.) and I am not a very good artist to begin with.
This is the first time I tried this style, and the first time I've ever drawn a full picture background and all. Normally I just do the subject but it was interesting to play around, till the app started playing around on me.
I liked how Nagate turned out, but everything else is blah lol. Supposed to be a barn and a water trough on the right, and poor Sasha is sitting out watching safely behind the fence.*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*|*~*|*~*
A Haiku of NagateHell horse from the pit
Riding to catch him, so quick
A bare backed bronco bust
The ocean is rough
He runs through the surf, no fear
Crashing on the shore
A young boy, twisted inside
Reaches out to Nagate
And finds peace in their love bond
Kids in hospital
Laugh and shout when they see him
They feel much better
He saved a brother
He revived a dying farm
He rescued my soul
Don't you ever go
Nagate Tanikaze
My Narakari
So I got creative after a glass or two of wine...so this is a drunk Haiku...
Let's see what I come up with tomorrow.

Nagate Enjoying A Swim~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*|*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Me, PersonallyThis is the first time I have participated in a competition such as this and I am quite glad I joined. This summer has been kinda rough on me, and each task allowed me to escape for a little bit and think creatively. The character of Simmarrah Tanikaze developed more and more over the course of the summer, and I found her taking on bits of my own personality and reactions. Zachary Tanikaze, based off my cousin, became a reflection of the darkness that's inside me that I have been struggling with for the past 2 years. I feel like I could write more to them, delve deeper into their lives and personalities.
Nagate's name came from the Netflix original series Nights of Sidonia, which was enjoyed with my cousins over the summer. The hero of the story became the inspiration for his name because Nagate was one of those characters you wished you could meet in real life. His sweet gentleman personality was based off the horse I first began to ride on, Rocket, who was absolutely bomb proof and loved kids. This tournament has given me a chance to connect with Nagate and Simmarrah and Zachary in a way that I would not have thought of myself. I had to think outside of the box and be creative, which sometimes can be difficult for me, and I have enjoyed the tournament overall.
