One rat isn't a rule, no - but it's their natural need, and it's neglecting an instinct to have one.
That is not true. My best friend's hamster and my rat had a very socially kind meeting. Rats are not very aggressive. Only when their young are threatened, they've had a bad day(experience answer), when they're fighting over a mate, territory, ect. And once again, I beg to differ about the whole one rat thing. I had a male hamster for 31/2 years and he was the happiest rat alive. Sure,it be kind, but it's not an absolute necessity to have more than one. I have two and they fight every now and then.A rat I think I more likely to kill another rat than a hamster.
It is very uncommon that a rat will kill another rat, the only situations I've seen that in has been the owner putting the wrong rats together, doing the wrong things.
What was the social meeting the hamster and rat had?
I beg you and your friend don't do that again.
Why do it? To amuse the owners? Rats are rats, they aren't hamsters, in the "wild" they are never going to socialise with hamsters. *palmface* I didn't say they were aggressive, but in the wild, they eat voles, mice, things that size - and you're letting them play??
Your two, when they fight, do they hurt eachother? Blood, gaping wounds, scratches?
I have lone rats - but only if they...
Lost their cagemate.
Could not be introduced to company after trying.
Try neutering males as sometimes they prefer female company.
There's no excuse to have a lone rat.
Not trading.
