Thanks for the warm welcome, and I'm happy that you both agree with me about Lance.(^~^)

Shiro is my favorite character, but its always kind of annoyed me how he pretty much said "Keith you're going to be the black paladin and that's that."
When he did it he didn't take into account whether or not keith really wanted to be the leader, and he didn't take into account that one of the other paladins may have been better for the role.

Makes me feel bad for Lance TBH.
Shiro is his hero and it would have mean't the world to him for him to be who Shiro wanted as the black paladin (probably would have helped a lot with his confidence issues too)

TLDR: Lance deserves the role of Shiro's right hand man, is a lot smarter then has been let on/hinted at so far, and would make a great successor for Shiro if a situation ever arose that made Shiro need one.

I completely agree with this. Keith was never and will never be seen as the leader of voltron in my eyes, and I do think that lance should be shiro's right hand (literally, cause ya know, the red lion is the right arm of voltron). Keith isn't a fit leader, and his temper and determination to get his own way gets in the way. If somebody were to lead voltron besides for shiro, id hope it would be lance.
