Huge theory.

So, there's this thing controlling Bramblestar. Let's just call it 'the shadow'.
The shadow talks to Shadowpaw, and he believes it's a Starclan warrior.
Before this, he gets a vision of Bramblestar murdering the heck out of Tigerstar (the current one)
First of all, Starclan isn't communicating with the five clans. Why? Because of the shadow.
Second of all, what Starclan warrior would tell Shadowpaw to leave Bramblestar out to die? I mean, sure, he did say 'He'll get worse before he gets better.' but still. Really???
Now the codebreakers. Shadowpaw, are you kidding me?! What member of Starclan would tell you to punish warriors that broke the code??
The shadow told Shadowpaw that Bramblestar would get better after he got worse. So, he went out and killed Bramblestar by freezing him. Then, while he was being carried to him tomb, he was alive.
So, why did the shadow tell Shadowpaw to do that?
So that the shadow would have full control over Bramblestar's body.
This also explains what Rootpaw sees, but we'll get to that later.
Before Bramblestar was killed, Rootpaw brought a vole to Bristlepaw for thanks. I quote, "His amber gaze was warm and friendly, but a chill crept over Rootpaw as he returned the Clan leader's gaze. He blinked, then blinked again. It was as though some kind of shadow was hanging over Bramblestar, yet no shadows lay in the clearing."
Before that, at a gathering, Shadowpaw was talking to the clan leaders about a vision. I quote, "As he spoke, he gave Shadowpaw a friendly nudge. At the touch, a strange sensation shot through Shadowpaw, as if claws were gripping him inside, twisting his belly and chilling his spine like the icy leaf-bare wind. His breath caught in his throat as he looked up at Bramblestar.
That felt so... wrong."
Boom.
The first weird thing about Bramblestar that Bristlepaw, then Bristlefrost, noticed was when Squirrelflight was organizing patrols. I quote, "'I know prey is scarce,' he meowed. 'But you shouldn't bother coming back until you have something to show for your efforts. If you're real warriors, you'll freeze your paws off if you have to, for the survival of the clan.'
As she listened, Bristlefrost grew uneasy at the tone of her leader's words. His voice sounded rougher than usual, not like the calm, measured leader Bristlefrost had always admired.
Squirrelflight seemed to share her misgivings. 'Aren't you being a little harsh?' she murmured to Bramblestar. 'All the warriors are doing their best under very difficult conditions'"
Bramblestar says that she has a soft spot for weak cats, then apologized.
Bristlefrost's second encounter is when Bramblestar is dying. She overheard Bramblestar telling the medicine cats that he had a vision of the clans fighting each other. He says that there were no stars, and only a thin claw-scratch of the moon. Then, after, he says "I'll remember you were honest, when not many cats were."
Alderheart revealed that the medicine cats couldn't get through to Starclan.
Then Bramblestar said "Action must be taken. But Alderheart, you shouldn't be afraid. You've done the right thing by telling me."
Then "Fetch Squirrelflight... Tell the leaders.... You must get back in touch with Starclan!"
A while later, at a gathering, Bramblestar tells the leaders that nobody should have codebreakers in their clan, and to punish those codebreakers. He continued on to ask any codebreakers to speak up. When no-cat did, he told the clans to report any codebreakers, which earned him a few retorts, gasps, and astonishment.
In the last chapter, Rootpaw finds a ghost Bramblestar calling for help.
Which reveals that, yes, Bramblestar did die/lose a life, and, yes, the shadow took over his body.
The shadow is, in my opinion, most likely a dead cat. Who? I have no idea.
Probably isn't a cat from Starclan, so I think it's a Dark Forest cat. Not Tigerstar - he's dead. But who else wants zero cats that have broke the code? I still have no idea.

hi friends!! hope you're all having a great august so far.

mine has been pretty great since the sequel to one of my favorite books came out this month. the sequel is called Of Ice and Shadows and it is the follow-up to Of Fire and Stars. they're both written by Audrey Coulthurst and i would recommend them if you're looking for something to read!
