I think the shading is a just a little harsh. You could try to lower the opacity or change the (I'm assuming you're using a multiply layer) to a lighter color. I tend to use blue or purple for white places because black looks too boring and it's not as pleasing to the eye.
I guess I would suggest using a variety of two or three colors to shade the fur, depending on the color of the base.
