Easy. Because he's mad. Like Hatter (other Hatter XD) explained, when Lewis Carroll wrote it, he himself had no answer. Maybe it was written to keep us readers guessing. To me, that's the fun of it. Hey, even Alice said it was pointless for a riddle to have no answer.
