Well gaara sort of crushes lees right arm and leg useing his sand coffin jutsu. This makes it nearly imposible for lee to become a ninja. Tsunade tells him the risks of preforming a surgery like the one he would need to fix his arm and leg. He takes the risk and in the end xomes out ok.

Yeah, the reason Gaara lightens up and becomes less bloodthirsty is also a spoiler if you haven't reached the first arc of Shippuden.
Recently there was a pretty depressing episode about Gaara's birth/parents. Not gonna give too much away on that because you could call it a spoiler too...
