I'm not a pass buyer either, but I will buy the equus one.
I usually have over one mil so the pass would be extremely expensive, so now I buy lots of fodder.
It costs one e and sells for one e so I don't loose and money. I make sure the fodder isn't a bonus offered at my ec so the boarders won't eat it.

I can now buy the passes for less than 1000 equus, but the downside is that I had to spend a lot of time buying fodder as I can only buy 10k at a time. It was worth it though, as I don't feel the urge to spend all that money now.

....this....is genius. Just got a pass for 1 equus.
That plus my croesus = 2 basically free passes a month (roughly)
