As for the poll, I selected the next to last option. For fantasy, user-created species, some of them are gorgeous, unique, and creative, but I've seen way too many that are just what you described- big cats with horns/wings. It can also be a pain to have a million things one cannot do with the species, and sometimes limits writing abilities, and not in a helpful way.

I prefer just to stick with real species myself, whether canines or something more exotic, though I can't speak for anyone else.

Well I made a new species, so I have to say I like them. ^^ But I prefer completely new species, not wolves or cats with something added to them.
I made mine in math class, and it started out as a long-tailed fox. I wanted to make it more unique, and by the next day it was a maned weasel-like creature with big eyes, long ears, lizard-like nose and only three toes. Plus, of course, the original long, fluffy tail. Pretty much I combined my favourite things to draw; I like fluffy manes and tails, long, skinny ears and big eyes, plus I can never seem to fit enough toes on the paws I draw. I actually made it before I saw any new species here, but only now decided to find a name and bring the kayrah to CS.

So many people have mistaken them for winged wolves with crystals. >.>

They're not even supposed to be in the canine family. XD

Anyway, I like new species because it's interesting to see what some people come up with. If the species is well thought out *coughKayrahcough* then I'd love to adopt one.

I hope Nirkeii seem like they have enough thought put into them. But there's not a whole lot you CAN'T do with Nirkeii. They're flexible.
