Pretty much anyone new to the fandom and mostly young adults have problems with this because we are still discovering who we are not just our fursonas. I have a friend, shes happily married and about in her 30s, and she hasnt changed her fursona for years because she knows who she is.
Simple designs, in my belief feel like you know who you are.
My 6th grade fursona:

Weird, how-did-i-come-up-with-this, random, not really good pallet colors
Current fursona:

Simple, not too complicated, evened out colors, normal color pallet, and I can see myself in her
But simple designs might not be what youre looking for at the moment. So if you want a complicated deign go for it! They can be really fun too!But mostly as you mature, you tend to go for a more simple design c:
My friends old sona:

Her new sona:

As you can see, she kinda went the opposite way and made her sona a little more complex, but is more well put together then her older sona.
You might want to start with the colors that you feel or want to represent the most. For me, I felt brown, black, and neon green was a sense of power/dominance. German shepherds also felt to carry that trait as well. Same goes for monsters, so I wanted to give her a giant monster-like tail (Not to mention how fun it is to have a giant fursuit tail)and that is what I wanted my sona to look like/ represent.
But like if say you wanted a shy, cute, quiet sona,
like maybe an example of colors would include white, pastel colors, maybe light tans, ext.
For like emo/scene/goth/punk/scary,
they would obviously be like black, shades of grey, dark colors with maybe just a few bright colors that pop (for noses, paw pads, tongue, ext.) like bright red, neon green, blue, and maybe pink (depending on personality), ext.
But those are just some stereotypical colors that represent personality.
http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/ ... 6yzo6u.pngSee how this persons sona started out aggressive/dominate? Then went for a more shy, helpless look? Colors arent always the main personality of a character. Body language and also how you draw them have a big impact too.
You grow with your fursona so dont rush it c:
Dont ever feel bad for changing your fursona many many times, I did it so much. Do what you feel fits you.<3
