I'm not exactly sure how to explain it, but somehow it just touched me emotionally xD I kind of thought that having fun with Kat reminded her of family, so she felt sad?...

Yeah, that part was... emotional.
She was probably wishing she hadn't missed out on that kind of fun as a kid, and wishing her Mom had never been sick.

My initial thoughts on "A Handful of Dirt" were that they ate so many cherries they got... loopy... or something...

I think the reason why I liked the Handful of Dirt chapter so much was because it was the very first time we saw any real emotion from Annie (enjoying herself instead of being so stony all the time).

I kinda did feel the berries had something to do with it... XD Or maybe they spent so much time eating delicious berries and just having fun that she forgot about her problems just for that moment.
