For me it is firstly quality, I find it hard to fall in love with a shapeless/poorly colored thing. So long as it is neat and tidy I'm fine. Secondly I got for what ever hits me. I have a wierd/mixed taste so its just basically what leaps at me I go for.

For me, I usually get drawn to three things:
-Colors: I generally go for darker-colored, gloomy-like donations with red/black/gray/etc...
-Patterns: I prefer intricate patterns that coordinate the colors well
-The Overall Feeling of the Character: Whether I think, "Sparkly", "Natural", "Gloomy", "Amazing", etc... So... Basically my first impression. =3
My main attraction to a character is actually based on whether or not it has scene hair, I can't resist scene hair. x3

Species, and whatever glonks me over the head are usually the reason I'll go for something. Art quality plays just a little bit of a part, unfortunately, because poorly-done Paint Scribbles squick me so much. :/ I like to be able to see the design before I go for it, because maybe I'd rather have zebra stripes rather than rounded paintbrush-tool bars, or something like that. It kinda ties more in with design, though; the artist doesn't matter. I've decided against some designs by some really awesome artists because of one thing or another.

Colors... As long as it's not Rainbow Barf, I'm pretty much colorblind when it comes to picking what character I'm going for. I'll go for the most clashy thing out there if I get an idea and it appeals to me. I have no fashion or color sense, I suppose. xD And anthro and quad... they make no difference to me. I've got both.

I picked color, pattern, and whatever hits me.

Color: I usually tend to gravitate towards browns, tans, grayish-blues, and especially grays. <3

Pattern: I have a swirl and spot addiction. ;-;

Whatever hits me: The first to don't really matter compared to this one. I have to feel like I really want the character, not just think it's beautiful. I actualy did that a few times, adopting a character I didn't really have a connection with. Thus, I gave Ara back. C:
